Travel
where a range of watersports are on offer.
With so many excellent restaurants in Stalis it is worth venturing out during your stay and sampling a few.
Popular dishes are souvlaki-skewered meat, delicious stifado stew and oven baked lamb. Several restaurants also offer authentic Greek dancing and kids will love the chance to smash dinner plates.
If you want a break from the tourist fare, venture off the beach road and into the sidestreets. Here you’ll find tiny tavernas used by the locals, where waiters usher you into the kitchen to proudly show off the day’s special.
There are several Brit and Irish bars serving up the traditional diet of English breakfasts, bingo and quiz nights should you miss home. The strip also hosts Ital- ian, Chinese, Indian, Dutch and German eateries. Souvenir hunters will love trawl- ing numerous shops selling everything from jewellery, watches and leather goods to Cretan products such as honey, wine, olive oil, soap and sea sponges.
Children are warmly welcomed every- where and always made too feel special by locals. Greece is famous for its meze - a little taste of everything - and by travel- ling around the island it’s easy to sample just that. Hop on a bus or head off in a
hire car to explore.
There is even a dotto train offering 90 minutes trips along the coast to the wild, anything-goes resort of Malia and Hersonissos. With only one main highway right round the island, the roads are easy to navigate.
Boat trips will take you to the haunting island of Spinalonga, a former leper colony. Or board the ferry to the enchanting isle of Santorini. Other attractions include the Samaria Gorge, magnificent White Mountains and the Lassithi Plateau.
Head east to Aghios Nikolaos and Elounda or west to the bustling streets of Herak- lion, the island’s capital.
A change of scene is effortless, and Stalis is always a fabulous place to come home to. The locals say you cry twice when you visit the island - once when you arrive and see the beauty and once when you leave.
We are still dry- ing away the tears.
