RYDE ROTUNDA 175 Years

The Royal Victoria Arcade is part of Ryde’s past, gifted to the future. This month it celebrated the 175th anniversary of the official opening. A huge birthday bash was held in the town to mark the milestone. Historic Ryde Society organised the three- day extravaganza with a Victorian flavour.

It featured history tours, antique fairs, music, processions and grand gala evenings. The Rotunda in the Arcade was recently given a new lease of life. Twelves paintings by local artists were installed in the iconic landmark.

They depicted the 12 months of the year and went on display in January. An original etching of the Arcade that showed images in the rotunda panels inspired the idea.

The Arcade was built by William Westmacott in 1835-36 at a cost of £10,000. It was designed to house 14 shops and a large room for the exhibition of art works. The Arcade boasts an array of interesting architectural features.
