Prepare to be A-Mazed

The giant maze, with some 500 metres of hedge

AS part of our new family section, we kick off with a familiar icon which has undergone a facelift inside and out.

The new landlords of The Griffin in Godshill are delighted if families come visit - then simply get lost.

The spacious interior is perfect for accommodating large parties

Their giant maze - shaped like the legendary half lion half eagle creature after which the pub is named - offers puzzling fun for all.

With some 500 metres of meandering hedging to wander around, your mission is to reach the giant stone slab in the centre, then re-trace your steps back out again.

The confusing labyrinth is only part of a huge grassy outdoor area guaranteed to keep youngsters entertained this summer.

Adjoining the pub is an enclosed children’s play area with climbing frame, slide and colourful wooden train.

The mini football pitch opposite has been completely re-turfed and a nearby timber wendy house is perfect for games of hide ‘n seek.

As the kids roam around and explore, you 72 www.styleofwight.co.uk

can chill with a refreshing pint or enjoy a delicious coffee.

Managers Ceri and Steve were keen to transform The Griffin into a welcoming local and tourist stop-off for all ages.

Ceri reveals: “We want to make The Griffin a true family friendly place to visit.

“We are blessed with the huge garden area to the rear.

“We have invested heavily in tidying up the maze, putting in new paths, re-laying the football pitch and fixing the goals.

“The playpark has also been given a revamp and is brilliant for the little ones.”

The 17th century stone-built watering hole in the postcard-picture village is steeped in history.

It was first recognised as a pub as far back as 1820, serving Appuldurcombe House

as a Coaching Inn.

Now almost 200 years later, Ceri and Steve are writing the latest chapter in its history.

They returned to the Island last year after spending eight years in Australia.

Steve says: “As a young family ourselves we are very keen to focus on good quality, locally sourced food, in a relaxed and friendly environment.

“The pub itself is large and spacious, allowing the children some freedom.”

Inside the interior has been revamped and boasts cosy open fires and comfortable furniture.

The overhauled menu features a well balanced selection of dishes slanted towards using local produce.
