Post sport Festival of the foot By STEPHEN BISSET
HUNTER pavement pounders will have plenty of opportunity to “hit the wall running” when the Winery Running Festival gets underway
next weekend.
Now in its sixth year, the festival will incorporate a full marathon, half marathon, a 10-kilometre run, a six-kilometre run and walk and two children’s marathon events. Festival organiser Paul Humphreys said he was expecting the biggest participant turnout yet, with more than 2000 competitors already signed up for the six events. “In our fi rst year of running the festival, we had around 400 people enter and this year it looks like we’ll have somewhere between 2000 and 3000 entrants, which is just fantastic,” he said.

“I think the reason we’ve been growing in popularity is the fantastic venue, for one, and also the fact that the festival offers one of the only marathons between Sydney and Queensland,”

Humphreys said the event had also been attracting more and more national and international attention, with competitors coming from as far afi eld as South Africa, England, Singapore, Austria and New Zealand. “This year, Dan Hornery, who is one of the top 20 marathon runners in the world, will be coming along, so it will be a really good chance for other runners and spectators to see someone of his calibre in action.” The marathon, from Hunter Valley Gardens, will be run on a two-loop, 21.1-kilometre course that will also make use of Thompson, Debeyers and McDonalds roads.
Another major drawcard, according to Humphreys, will be the two children’s marathons – the

Storybook 2K and the conclusion of the Kids’ Marathon program. The Kids’ Marathon is an initiative where children made an eight-week pledge to run fi ve kilometres each week. They will run the fi nal 2.195 kilometres at the festival, making up the full marathon distance.
The Storybook 2K is intended for children
aged fi ve to 17 who are unable to do the full Kids’ Marathon program. They’ll run around a course through the Hunter Valley Gardens’ Storybook gardens.
“This festival is all about promoting active lifestyles, and having these events for the kids is great because it gets them into the habit of running and keeping fi t, and the fact that the kids in the marathon program will be able to say, at the end of the day, that they have completed an actual full-length marathon is just great,” Humphreys said. The Winter Running Festival will be on
at Hunter Valley Gardens on Sunday, July 17. For more information, visit their website at
