on THE BOX Arachnophobia Sat, 10.45pm, Seven

IF you are a little squeamish around spiders, then this deliciously creepy horror- comedy probably won’t do much to abate your fears. A large spider from the jungles of South America is accidently transported in a crate with a dead body to America where it mates with a local spider. Soon after, the residents of a small Californian town disappear as the result of spider bites from the deadly spider’s off spring. It’s up to a couple of doctors with the help of an insect exterminator to annihilate the army of creepy crawlies before they take over the entire town. Starring Jeff Daniels (Dumb and Dumber)

and John Goodman (The Big Lebowski), Arachnophobia is perfect Saturday night creature-feature fare.

Explosions in the Sky Take Care, Take Care, Take Care (Spunk)

on THE STEREO

IF you like your music on the richly textured, atmospheric side, then you could do a lot worse than Texan four-piece Explosions in the Sky’s sixth studio album Take Care, Take Care, Take Care. The main focus of this album is a reliance

on some extremely reverb and echo-heavy guitars that, with textured feedback and angular noodling creates a soundscape that wouldn’t be lost on the silver screen. While this quartet prefers to approach

things sans vocals, (aside from the occasional “ooh” and “mmm”) there is so much else going on here that it doesn’t really matter. Take Care, Take Care, Take

Care is a very interesting album that divulges more and more sonic secrets on subsequent listens.

STRAIGHT from the heart and reminiscent of a smoky, French cafe, the Baker Suite creates a seductive and potent world, carrying the listener through elegant ballads, gypsy romantica and a lurching night waltz in the rain.

FRI The lush instrumentation of the Baker

Suite, with the addition of Paul Grabowsky on piano, ignite these stylish and elegant songs that refl ect on love, family and strangeness. Grabowsky produced the Baker Suites’

album A Quartet for Car Horns and Brakes in 2010. Since its release, the band has toured internationally to sold-out shows and standing ovations.

A highlight of this show will be a

performance of a recent collaboration between Grabowsky and Baker for the theme song for Fred Schepsi’s new fi lm Eye of The Storm, based on a Patrick White novel. “I have always treasured great songwriting,

and after listening to the Baker Suites’ demo recordings I was struck by the depth and authenticity of the material. It harks back to great writers such as James Taylor, Jimmy Webb, Carole King or Burt Bacharach,” Grabowsky said. The Baker Suite are John Baker (guitar,

vocals), Gayle Buckby (accordion, vocals), Lyndon Gray (double bass) and BJ Barker (drums). And for this tour, Paul Grabowsky is on piano. They will be playing at Lizotte’s Newcastle

on Friday, July 15.

British Sea Power, Thurs, July 28, Oxford Art Factory, Darlinghurst

ALREADY confi rmed on the stellar line-up for this year’s Splendour in the Grass, UK darlings British Sea Power have just confi rmed

a special sideshow in Sydney this month. The six-piece, released their fourth studio

album Valhalla Dancehall earlier this year. A record that musically moves from concise electronic pop and solemnity to swaggering thug-glam in songs about local libraries, indigenous societies, pigeon shoots and the party to which everyone is invited, this album takes turns unexpected yet smooth. As a live band, it has been said that their

inventive shows have become a latter-day rock institution. Playing shows across the globe in the most unanticipated of locations, British Sea Power have been atop the Great Wall of China, on the Scilly Isles, on the Arctic islets, down a Cornish slate mine, on ships at sea and deep in Polish forests. The only thing to be expected of British Sea Power is that they’ll do something unexpected.

on DVD The Mechanic

ACTION star of the minute Jason Statham (Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, The Expendables) stars as the “mechanic” Arthur Bishop – an elite assassin with a strict code and unique talent for cleanly eliminating targets.

But when his mentor and close friend

Harry (Donald Sutherland) is murdered, Bishop is anything but detached. His next assignment is self-imposed – he wants those responsible, dead.His mission grows complicated when Harry’s son Steve (Ben Foster) approaches him with the same vengeful goal and a determination to learn Bishop’s trade. Bishop has always acted alone, but he can’t turn his back on Harry’s son. A methodical hit man takes an impulsive student deep into his world and a deadly partnership is born. This remake of the 1972 Charles Bronson hit, while never reaching the same heights as the original, off ers up some fun and quite tense moments.
