Ten years on, still going strong

NEWCASTLE contemporary artist Malcolm Berry will have an extra special reason for celebrating when his latest solo show opens at Art Systems Wickham (ASW) this weekend. The show New Light will mark Berry’s 10th year as an exhibiting artist. Berry said he was excited

at the prospect of reaching the milestone and it also gave him the opportunity to take stock of his artistic achievements, thus far. “As for my 10th anniversary, it’s a cause for

personal celebration,” Berry said. “There have been many highlights over the years – I was the

quite up in smoke ANOTHER volcanic ash cloud, which caused fl ight chaos across Australia, stopped comedian Jimeoin from reaching Newcastle for his performance. He was forced to postpone his Wests New Lambton performance until Tuesday, July 26. To make it as easy as possible for

patrons, all current ticket holders will be able to use their existing tickets for the new performance and can sit at the table and seat number they originally booked.

fi rst artist to hold a solo show at the Industry Development Centre, I held two solo shows at the John Paynter Gallery and quite a successful solo show in Sydney in 2005. “I also spend fi ve years

at the former John Miller Galleries, featuring in two solo shows and the closing group show. Berry said that during his decade as an artist, his art had been viewed in the Gibson

Street gallery, Christ Church Cathedral and the Coff s Harbour Regional Art Gallery. He said he was excited about his latest ASW

show, as it would feature 15 new works that strayed a little away from his usual landscape themes. “While still being immersed in the landscape theme, these works have a totally diff erent look about them to anything I have done previously. “At fi rst glance, they appear to be random,

arbitrary and abstract, however there is an intent. The look of a sapling forest viewed from ground level has been replaced with my interpretation and impression of a topographical pan over the forest. “I’m very excited about this exhibition

for two reasons. Firstly, this is my debut solo show at ASW and secondly, it marks the 10th anniversary of my exhibiting career, which is pretty exciting. It will be my 12th solo show and I’m delighted to be part of the stable of artists at ASW.” Malcolm Berry’s New Light exhibition will be on at ASW from Friday, July 8 to Sunday, July 24.
