Diabetes awareness events WITH Diabetes Awareness Week just around the corner, there will be plenty of events around Newcastle aimed at raising awareness about the disease. The Australian Diabetes Council will be off ering a check of home blood glucose meters and an information day at its resource centre, 535 Hunter Street, Newcastle on Monday, July 11 and Friday, July 15 respectively. Wallsend library will also be holding an information day on Thursday, July 14 where health professionals will be on hand to answer questions.
Koala capers THE Blackbutt Reserve junior rangers program is back again for the July school holidays with a theme of “koala capers”. Bushland reserve co-ordinator Bradley West said participants would have a close encounter with one of Blackbutt’s resident koalas, pat a ringtail possum and search for hidden ground critters. The program runs from 9.30am to 11.30am on July 6, 7, 8, 11, 12, 13 and 14. For more information and to book, call 4904 3344.
Winter appeal COMPASS Housing Services’ CARE group will be holding a winter appeal in Newcastle this weekend. The appeal will allow Compass tenants and other community members with a health care card to fi ll a bag with clothes and blankets for $5. There will also be a sausage sizzle. Compass senior housing manager Maree Field said many people would be without warm clothes and blankets this winter. “The Winter Appeal is an oppotunity for our staff and tenants to band together to help those in need,” she said. The appeal will be on at Broadmeadow PCYC on Saturday, July 9 from 9am to12pm.
Here’s a bubbler with a difference
LAKE Macquarie’s fi rst water bottle refi ll station has been turned on at Toronto, ready to help foreshore visitors save money and the environment.
The station is part of a trial by Hunter Water, Lake Macquarie City Council and Toronto Tidy Towns to encourage people to refi ll reusable bottles
rather than buy disposable plastic ones.
The refill station is near the rotunda in Regatta Walk foreshore park, a convenient spot for the many walkers and cyclists using the foreshore area. Lake Macquarie Council’s manager of sustainability Alice Howe said plastic bottle use was on the rise in Australia with much of the waste ending up in landfi ll. “With 2.7 million tonnes of plastic being used to produce plastic bottles worldwide each year, and over 65 per cent of that ending up in landfi ll, we need to be making it easy for people to refi ll and reuse,” Dr Howe said.
“Filling a reusable bottle also reduces your carbon footprint when you consider the energy used to produce a plastic bottle, transport it to the shop and then dispose of it as waste.” Peter Dennis, a Hunter Water general manager, said the
refi ll station was another initiative to help residents make a difference.
“The water refi ll station is a fantastic way to make the most of the Hunter’s top-quality drinking water, and the result of a great partnership with Lake Macquarie City Council,” he said. “We know the community is keen to fi nd more sustainable ways to use water, and opting for reusable bottles is easier and cheaper than buying bottled water.” Toronto Tidy Towns president Kelly Hoare said that the refi ll station trial complemented the Toronto Tidy Towns’ campaign on bottled water. “We are delighted that Hunter Water and [the] council were able to provide this practical assistance,” Ms Hoare said. The refi ll station also includes a hygienic bubbler for thirsty people who don’t have a bottle.
