Post sporting briefs with Stephen Bisset and Michael Cain
RUGBY UNION: Brotherly love Much is always made of the Beckett brothers Nathan and Dan whenever they lock horns in the coach’s box when Nathan’s Hamilton play Dan’s
Wanderers. Well, it happened again last weekend with the Hawks beating the two-blues 45-15 at Passmore Oval. I asked Nathan if he had any sympathy for Wanderers, or Dan, for that matter. “Don’t really feel sorry for Wanderers. There going through a phase which all clubs go through, like we did at Hamilton in the mid-’90s. I don’t think they felt for us at the time. In saying that, they’re not going too bad. They troubled us a bit on the weekend and I still feel they’ll be in the fi nals. As for Dan, well, this is his last season at the club and he won a premiership with them in his fi rst year – some blokes never win a premiership. He has nothing to prove. He’s an intense coach who takes it very seriously. Hates losing. Don’t we all.”
A little more on the rah rahs. Two teams from very diff erent scales need to be congratulated. Nelson Bay have struggled to attract players throughout the years and usually fi nd themselves down near the bottom of the Newcastle and Hunter competition ladder. Well, last Saturday they had one of their fi nest hours (sorry one hour and 20 minutes), beating University 29-27 at the Uni. And congratulation to the Queensland Reds who are into this weekend’s Super 15 fi nal after demolishing the Blues on the weekend. They are both playing rugby the way it should be played. Rah!
FOOTBALL: Loyal bear I’m going to give a good rap to a player in the NBN League who goes about his business with no fuss on
the fi eld, gets the job done and has scored some super goals in his time. His name is Michael Ryan and he plays for the Weston Bears club. Last weekend at Bear Park, he played his 100th game in fi rst grade against Edgeworth. Sadly for him and the Bears it wasn’t the result he and they would have liked, losing 3-1, but from all reports he again put in another good performance. I have to say, Weston is one club that really makes a big eff ort to celebrate player milestones. One hundred games means that a player has been at a club for at least fi ve years, a rarity in this day and age. Onya Mick!
Michael Cain is a journalist for NBN Television.
BIG OCEAN: Congratulations to Caves Beach surfer Glen Sharrock who put in a fantastic performance, playing to win at the NSW Open Surfmasters titles at Bombo Beach, Kiama. Sharrock went all out, and was fi rst under the wire – taking home top honours in the over 55s category, as well as second in the over 50s behind current over 45 world masters champion Rod Baldwin.
