You may have noticed the towns splendid new gateway signs erected recently after the old signs had become an eyesore following traffic damage and general wear and tear. Ian McTurk has been working with the Hyndburn Borough Council to ensure a quality of sign sympathetic to the heritage of the town. Funded by the HBC Cabinet Budget the signs were unveiled by Councellors Lynn Wilson and Peter Clarke who are pictured above along with Ian McTurk, Chairman of the Harwood Bar Residents Association.

In a busy month at Great Harwood Golf Club, Head Greenkeeper Kevin Sweeney and Alan Breckell took the main honour, lifting the Spring Open title with 42 points. That score was good enough for the pair to take the £200 first prize, with father-and-son duo Simon and Peter Kirtlan claiming second, two points adrift on 40. The following week, club captain Arthur Drain proved there is no truth in the supposed ‘Captain’s Curse’ as he lifted the W.H Duerden Cup with a nett 67. Chris Evans won the battle against the elements on May 15th, his nett 72 good enough to claim the Ted Sowerby Memorial on a wicked day. Fighting against the wind and the rain, Evans was one of only three players to score an under-par round on the day, pipping Jeff Kirkbright and John Cairns to top spot. On the Ladies side Kath Lord had a great start to the season winning the V Hunter Par shield, the April Medal and was runner up to Sheila Cain in the Marion Briggs Trophy. The Scott Leggatt foursomes was won by Sandra Baron and Ann Jackson. Sheila Polson and Gill Halliwell each won May monthly medals. The Ladies Open Team event was won by Julie Dyer (Gt H) Ann Robinson & Julie Crossley (Acc), and Elsie Blackburn (Rish) with a good score of 79 points in very windy conditions.
