The Local Herald Literary Corner. Over the years we have been pleased to bring a degree of educational and cultural articles to our readers, thus elevating our little magazine to a level of sophistication way above other publications, providing a valuable service to the community. We have been searching the latest literary offerings and we suggest the following books as required reading. I Failed as a Lion Tamer…. Claude Bottom. Helping Alcoholics… Carrie M Holme. Eating on a Budget…. Roland Marge. Keeping Caged Birds…. Ken Airey. Fun With Letters…. Alf A Bett. My Political Memoirs… Lisa Lott. Reading Problems...Liz Dexia. The Big Book Of Welsh Jokes… Dai Laffin. Dating Period Furniture...Anne Teak. And an all time classic from Dave Spikey……... His wife was nattering him to take up DIY and do some jobs around the house. He went to the library and asked the librarian, “ Do you have any books on shelves ?” Brilliant.

It Never Rains ! Hyndburn Weather report for April 2011 “Oh to be in England now that Aprils there” (Home thoughts from abroad...Robert Browning 1812-1899) this chap knew what to write all those years ago. He would have loved it this month, as everything is as he would have wished. Plenty of sunshine, very little rain, and all the spring flowers waking from their winter sleep, making a floral display for all to see. It was the warmest, sunniest April, (Met Office) since records began. The mercury rose locally some days well into the twenties, with the 21st being the hottest day reaching 23.9c. With only a half of the average rainfall in the North West, less than that in Hyndburn by the way, it proved to be a very dry month, with 23 dry days......unbelievable for April. Air pressure remained quite constant, leading to very light winds for most of the month, but a nagging easterly developed during the last week, and kept the temperature down a touch, where it was very cool out of the sun. As the days lengthen, and it gets warmer, we are all hopeful of a beautiful summer, those cold icy days in December, are now long forgotten memory, but as things stand, we really could do with a few more days of rain. Now I don’t want to put a dampener (do you get it!!) on things, but as you know once it starts, it doesn’t know when to give over, so I hope if it does rain occasionally, you don’t blame me......too much!
