“I Believed.” Let me take you back to August 2010, we had just six players signed up for the year and the season only weeks away. The bookies had us down for relegation fodder and the atmosphere that surrounded the club was extremely cloudy. John Coleman however, had other ideas, he believed that he had a solid nucleus, a base on which to build a new footballing philosophy which he developed after watching Spain in the world cup finals. He sought his extra players and we rumbled into our first home fixture against Aldershot on a balmy August afternoon completing an inconclusive 0-0 draw. Now fast forward to January 2011, the club, having missed out on playing in December due to the horrendous snow we experienced sat miserably in 19th position. We had played good football, we began to attract attention, we began to believe in something magical happening in front of our very eyes. We backed the boys for the play-offs.

From January to May our run took us from 19th to 5th in the league. Our free flowing football was now acclaimed across the country and the nation began to take notice while our support began to believe. Beating teams by three goals on nearly every home fixture saw our attendance rise dramatically and on the 30th April we confirmed our spot in the play-offs. Now most of you will know the ending to this particular story, beaten comfortably over two legs by a very powerful Stevenage team. But what price must the bookies have had us to have got that far?

To believe in promotion is one thing. But to believe in ambition, pride and togetherness is another and that is what I believed in this season. A season of hope and enjoyment and what price would promotion next season be for the bookies? Two National Heroes Born In June.

George Mallory Born: June. 18, 1886 Died: June. 1924 Mountaineer. He helped lead the first three expeditions to Mount Everest in the early 1920s, and vanished while attempting to reach the summit. When a journalist asked why he wanted to climb the world's tallest mountain, Mallory famously replied, "Because it's there". This often-quoted remark, and the mystery that still surrounds his death, have contributed to his legendary status among adventurers.

Robert Falcon Scott Born: June. 6, 1868 Died: March. 29, 1912 Explorer. He and the other four members of his team reached the South Pole on January 17, 1912, only to discover that Roald Amundsen had arrived about a month earlier. On the return trip, all five perished. After becoming trapped and tent-bound by a blizzard, Scott, Lt. Henry R. "Birdy" Bowers, Royal Marines, and Dr. Edward Adrian Wilson died from starvation and exposure on the Ross Ice Shelf. They were 11 miles from a supply depot. They were discovered on November 12, 1912. Their bodies were left in their tent, which was then covered with snow, and a cairn was erected to mark the spot, at approximately 178 degrees east, 79 degrees 50 min. south. As the ice shelf is moving slowly northward, it is estimated their bodies, encased in ice, will return to the Ross Sea in about 200 years.

You’ve made your bed, now go and bounce on it. Peter Scott.
