In response to our enquiry about L.S. Lowry’s painting entitled “Street in Great Harwood,” we have had quite a few suggestions. Samples below. The Great Harwood Appreciation Society asked the question ‘What street is this?’ back in 2004 when the painting was up for sale. It was generally accepted that the finished painting looked nothing like any street in Great Harwood. But the unearthing of the pencil sketch by Chris Lynch showed that the great man had visited Great Harwood (otherwise why choose Great Harwood as a title) and done a stylised pencil sketch of a street. Unfortunately we are unable to identify the street from the sketch. Hope this helps. John Duckworth

I think this could be Greaves Street. I think the building in the middle of the picture, ie, end of street, is a row of terraced houses on Lomax street. The mill chimney could be Kemps. (the old co-op). I know the doorways appear to be arched, but this is a painting, not a photo.

I can't think of any other street in Great Harwood that is so long and with no back entries. Joan Berry (Mrs) Could be looking down Princess Street at the old gas works, would be on town gas at that time probably. From: Leon Wright

Hi Not ever lived in Harwood only Rishton my guess would be Princess Street. Love old pictures like these. Cheers. Christine.

Harold & Ethel. Ethel: I dropped my false teeth in the lake when I was feeding the ducks. Harold: How did you find them ? Ethel: I didn’t. This nice man gave me a pair from his pocket but they didn’t fit. So he gave me another pair but they didn’t fit. Then he produced a third pair which fit perfectly. Harold: You were lucky to have a dentist walk past just at the right moment. Ethel: Oh no, he wasn’t a dentist, he was an undertaker.

Son says to his dad, “Can you sign your

“Yes I think so.” Son replies, “ Great , shut your eyes and sign my school report.”

Dad, I’ve just been on Wikipedia and they say that Concorde used to fly at twice the speed of sound. So how did they manage to speak to Air Traffic Control ? Well son, in those days Air Traffic Control was staffed mainly by women, who, as you will discover in later life, have the ability to answer a question before it’s been asked.

Supermarket Rage. I saw this woman in the car park at Tesco last week, she was in her car actually nutting the steering wheel. I thought she must have missed a major item on her shopping list. I looked again and realised she was just trying to pull her seat forward.
