Hello again from the Rotary Club of Great Harwood and Rishton. At the Millennium the UN declared: “The need for safe drinking water is denied to many people in this world. Every 15 seconds a child will die as a result of drinking unsafe water. We are committed by the year 2015 to provide this basic human right” Rotary has been concerned for years with projects such as Water Aid in the provision of safe drinking water, particularly in water starved areas of the third world and with emergency aid such as Aquaboxes to provide clean water in the immediate aftermath of natural disasters. In 2005 a member of the Rotary Club of Brynmawr came across a relatively new method of providing instant drinking water in emergencies through a Danish invented device called LifeStraw®. LifeStraw Personal is a portable water purifier for prevention of common diarrhoeal disease. It can be carried around for easy access to safe and clean drinking water.

It is just 25 cm long and 29 mm in

diameter and can be hung around the neck. LifeStraw requires no electrical power or spare parts. The user simply inserts the end of the tube into any available water and sucks it through the tube into the mouth. The water is purified as it passes through the tube. As can be seen in the picture the device is easy to carry, simple to use and the cost is under £10 per unit including cost of delivery.

Our Club has adopted the supply of LifeStraws,

through

Rotary, as an effective means of providing emergency aid and is working in partnership with local schools in raising funds for the project. We are part way through a programme of Powerpoint presentations to schoolchildren and parents and this has already resulted in donations of over £430, monies raised by children from just three schools. We will keep you informed of the progress of this life-saving project, however, should you wish to be associated with this project or would like to make a donation, these will be gratefully accepted by The Rotary Club of Great Harwood & Rishton, c/o Sparth House Hotel, Whalley Road Clayton-Le -Moors, Accrington. I was explaining to my wife last night that when you die you get reincarnated but must come back as a different creature. She said I would like to come back as a cow. I said you're obviously not listening.

When tempted to fight fire with fire, remember that the Fire Brigade usually use water.

Have you tried our Pub Quiz ? 20. Does this rag smell like chloroform to you?
