Rotary Charity Walk is a Huge Success More than 800 fundraisers took part in the annual ‘Walk 4 Your Charity’, organised by Church & Oswaldtwistle Rotary Club, and raised more than £60,000 in the process. This is the biggest charity walk event held in Hyndburn each year and, although Rotary organises the event, the walkers raise money through sponsorship for their own charity or good cause. Many local organisations benefit from funds raised by individuals taking part, from scout groups and football teams to local hospice and cancer organisations. This year was the best yet according to organisers and there was a party atmosphere at the finishing line due to the presence this year of the Blojangles band. Also new to this year’s walk was a fancy dress competition with £50 won for her chosen charity by Carol Ratcliffe and a team prize of £50 won by Lewis Baker, 14, and his carer Colin Battrick both dressed as Dennis the Menace. Lewis, who suffers from cerebral palsy, completed the walk in his wheelchair and raised money for East Lancashire Hospice in memory of his grandmother, who died three years ago. The walk began at Junction 7 Business Park in Clayton-le-Moors and took walkers along the Leeds and Liverpool Canal and through Great Harwood before returning to the business park. Organiser Ron Pickup said ”Everything went extremely well this year, even the weather held off. Next year’s event is already being planned for May 13th 2012 and we want to build on the success of this year”.
