Summer Events and Opportunities in Gt Harwood The residents of Great Harwood are in for a treat in the month of June this summer. Several events are scheduled in which they can take part, have a good time and say thank you in an appropriate way to some of the voluntary groups that provide these activities.
June 4th Saturday Annual Boundary Walk (Civic Society) The annual Great Harwood Boundary Walk commemorates the original boundary checks carried out by the boys of the parish and local officials which was known as “Beating the Bounds”. There will be two groups on the day – one for practised walkers who want to cover the approximate 10 mile route in record time, the other for those who prefer a more leisurely pace and like to take in the magnificent vistas that are scattered along the town’s boundary. The walk will begin close to the old Lidgett pub at 9.30am on the day. Everyone is invited and encouraged to take part
in this traditional Great Harwood
event. For further details contact the Chairman, Steve Aspin, on 01254 889328.
June 11th Saturday-Dave Smith Memorial Trophy (Great Harwood Rovers) This annual tournament held in honour of the late Dave Smith, a founder member and past President of the club, attracts upwards of 50 teams from across the North West and involves more than 500 youngsters both boys and girls. The competition takes place on Lyndon House playing fields and everyone is invited to come along and enjoy the day. The event provides the opportunity to witness at first hand the continual hard work put in by the clubs officials for the benefit of the youth of our area.
June 12th Sunday-Whit Walk (Churches Together in Great Harwood) The annual “Procession of Witness” on Pentecost Sunday will begin outside St Bartholomew’s church on Cliffe Lane at 2.00pm and process down Church St and Blackburn Rd before turning into St Huberts Rd. A commemorative service will then take place in the church of Our Lady and St Hubert and the speaker this year will be Debbie Peatman, the Ecumenical Development
Officer from Churches Together in
Lancashire. Everyone is encouraged to turn out and support this traditional Great Harwood event.
June 25th Saturday-Armed Forces Day Parade (HBC
helped by the British Legion) Residents are encouraged to take part in Hyndburn Borough’s parade of thanks which sets off from Towngate at 11.30am. It is an honour to hold this event in Great Harwood as it is usually held in Accrington and residents are asked to consider swelling the already substantial numbers that will be participating in this parade which is being organised by the Hyndburn BC with help from the local branches of the Royal British Legion.
June 26th Sunday-Prom in the Park (Friends of Memorial Park) This popular annual event has been brought forward this year to make it an enjoyable celebratory weekend in Great Harwood. The music will begin at 2.00pm and everyone is welcome and encouraged to come along, bring a picnic and generally enjoy the afternoon in the town’s beautiful Memorial Park.

INVITATION FROM ALL SAINTS GRANGE BOWLING CLUB The club is inviting the people of Hyndburn to visit their green and learn how to play crown green bowls. A special invitation goes to any that are new to the area, living on their own, or are retired or unemployed or just fed up and wanting to find an active and enjoyable leisure time activity in safe and pleasant surroundings. The club is situated on Church Street, Clayton le Moors, next to All Saints Parish Church. It has over 100 members and celebrated its centenary last year. The club will be opening its doors to anyone that wants to meet new friends and learn how to play bowls during any weekend afternoon. Admission will be free on these occasions, bowls and mats will be provided, experienced members of the club will be on hand to teach beginners and learners and there will be free refreshments during the afternoon. Visitors will be asked to wear flat shoes to avoid damaging the green and bring a smile with them! There will also be an opportunity, for those who are interested, to join the club and become regular members. Anyone who wants to take advantage of this invitation or requires more information, please contact the Club Secretary, Mr Laurie Denton, on 01254 208495 or 07989 043819 or online on
