Gaining respect on and off the track Though Candace hasn’t received much grief from men in racing, she has encountered some ribbing. “It is the same for any driver; if you are new, they are going to pick on you. It doesn’t matter if you are a guy or a girl – It is just anyone that is new.”
On the track, two brothers clipped Candace during a race (in other words, gave her some low-blows and tried to psyche her out), but after the exchange, Candace confronted them and made her presence known. Since their exchange, the blows have ceased, but Candace has not given them an inch on the track. “You have to show people that you aren’t going to lie down and take it. If you are going to dish it out, you better be willing to take it.”
When I mention to Candace that I’ve heard complaints about the fundamentals of NASCAR-- that drivers only go in circles or ‘play chase’, the races are too long, it is not really a sport,
