tant month because I am a breast cancer survivor. I don’t think I can remember a day that I ever thought I would have been told “you have breast cancer”. In fact, I didn’t even do breast exams. It just wasn’t something that I ever thought about. Yes, I went annually to have my mammogram, but that was “routine”. Nothing was going to hap-
pen to me. Wasting the doctor’s time I was in the shower getting ready for work 12 ®
one morning and felt something odd. It felt as if you laid a straw on its side and ran your finger down the length of the straw. Odd, I thought, but put it out of my mind. Something kept nagging at me and finally I decided to make a quick trip to my OB-GYN. Why? I really wasn’t sure. I didn’t think it was anything and, in fact, when my doctor came into the examining room, I found myself apologizing because I felt that I probably was wasting her time. She checked me out and said that it was not a lump but praised me for coming in just to be on the safe side. As I was dressing and getting ready to leave, she decided that she wanted me to go for a digital ultrasound. Again, “just to be safe”.
