door. My tech was fairly young, very sweet and we chatted about many things while she completed my digital mammography. I waited in the room while the films were developed. I read a National Geographic. No, actually I just kind of held it as I was starting to get a teeny bit anxious. I stood up as she returned to thank her and to leave. “Wait”, she said. “I have to take a few more. I’m kind of new…” Funny, I thought, she’s not really making eye contact and I was starting to feel very, very tense.

A lot going on I waited, once again, while more films were developed. No magazine. She returned and said that she needed to take me down the hall for just one more thing. I followed, was shown a cot and asked to lay down and waited. Shortly, a young lady came in and with a quick smile introduced herself and got down to business. Lots of pointing, clicking and drawing lines on a monitor that I could barely see to my right. Hmmm, I thought. This does not seem good. She comments, “you are a very busy lady, very busy lady”. “Yes,” I replied, “and I am sorry I can’t remember where we met.” She had a puzzled look on her face and said “I mean you have a lot going on in your breast.” Ohhh, doesn’t sound like this is where the party needs to be, I think to myself.

In competent hands I walk down the hall to the dressing room, put on my clothes and am starting to

get even more anxious. I meet with her outside. She is a little dynamo! Bright and to the point. I like her and know that I am in very competent hands. She said that she sees some things that are a little disturbing. O.K., what next? A biopsy, she replies. “On Friday.” I’m not too keen with that but know that, still, everything will be “just fine”.

Taking a Friend So, I go to the hospital with a colleague/ friend from work all the while letting her know that I am a big girl and can certainly do this by myself. Wrong! I needed her. As things began to sink in and I got ready for my biopsy, I was so glad to have had her there. We left and I was told that I would be called the first of the week with results. Kind of weak and a little shaky, I knew the worst was over. I would have my results which certainly were going to be just fine and then could get back to business and get this all behind me.

Life changing news Monday – 3:35 ish (LOL) I certainly do know when that phone call came in. The first thing I heard was,” I have not so great news, and I need for you to get somewhere so you can take some information.” I headed to the conference room, starting to feel very shaky. “Your biopsy came back positive. You have breast cancer.” Talk about being stunned. I was blown away! When we hung up, I called my senior staff into the conference room and told them the news. Then I called my family. The rest of the staff was told as well. That is a day
