| Letters | IHRSA30 Vår Stör!
We had a great time at the convention— very good meetings and a lot of inspiring lectures. Thanks to the IHRSA team for the great work it’s doing in pulling these meetings together! —| Anders Carlson | CEO | Actic | Täby, Sweden
IHRSA30 the Best!
> Please extend my regards to the IHRSA staff for a superb week in San Francisco. The trade-show floor had a palpable energy, and every vendor had praise for the new two-day format. The entire event was one of the best! Congratulations to everyone at IHRSA. —|

> I wanted to drop you a note to say, “Thank you, IHRSA, for a terrific convention!” Attendance was up, the vendor fair was great, and the
attendees all seemed to be in good spirits. Booth traffic was good, and I was really impressed at the international draw at this year’s show. Nearly 30% of the attendees we met were from foreign countries. Considering the fact that iGo Figure Software is translated into 13 languages and is installed in more than 50 countries, it was great to be able to show off the international capabilities of our program. Thank you again for hosting such a great convention. And see you next year in LA! —|

> Kudos to IHRSA on a great show and its excellent choice of Associate Member of the Year (Motionsoft). But extra thanks for inviting Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh to deliver the keynote address. I remember Contributing Editor Jon Feld’s blog post on CBI Unbound, in which he wondered why Hsieh would be a good speaker for IHRSA, and concluded it was his passion. But I think that’s only half of it. I think we really need to hear from people who break down walls,
challenge apathy, and don’t accept remaining stuck in old ways. Early on, critics said an online shoe retailer would fail because “people need to try on shoes in a store before they buy.” They were wrong. Zappos understood that convenience, matched with person- alized service, was as important as anything else in sales.
The wellness industry needs to think like Hsieh to find out
how customers’ lifestyles are changing and figure out how technology fits in. We get excited that, as creators of club-management tech-
nology, Motionsoft can help clubs move from what they’ve historically delivered, in terms of the member experience, to what they can offer in our Android/iPhone/WiFi world. Our products, such as myClub and Moso—which offer smartphone check-in, online sign-ups, and personal training data that integrates with members’ profiles in the cloud—help clubs engage with members in 2011. As I like to say, “Your competition’s 45-pound plate weighs
the same as your 45-pound plate.” What retains members is the experience clubs provide, and, today, that means engaging members with convenient, personalized technology. Like Zappos, our industry needs to rethink how we can get
people to “try on our shoes”—that is, use our clubs. As with Hsieh, it’s those sorts of ideas that excite our team at Motion- soft. And, as at Zappos, if anyone wants a personal tour of Motionsoft’s office, I’ll pick you up at the airport myself! —|

Proud of IHRSA
> I’ve read, and heard from many people, that the IHRSA European Congress was very good. I congratulate IHRSA on becoming, year after year, a more solid organization, worldwide. Fortunately, we were represented by Pedro Ruiz, who
was able to share the opinions of AGAP (Association de Empresas de Ginasios e Academias de Portugal) and describe the work that’s being done here. It’s a very tough moment for the industry, but we can’t toss the towel to the ground! AGAP is proud of IHRSA, and we’d like to thank the organization
for debating the VAT issue in the Global Federations Meeting. It’s important for us to know that IHRSA cares about our major concerns. —|
