THE GARDEN OF NOW – MINDFULNESS MEDITATION AND STRESS REDUCTION FOR BEGGINNERS

“Mindfulness Meditation is a non-judgmental, non-goal directed, and acceptance-based manner of present moment awareness.” Derek G. Turesky in The Garden of Now

Produced by Derek G. Turesky, The Garden of Now DVD is designed to gently assist beginners into the world of mindfulness. It includes an introduction into Mindfulness Meditation followed by a collection of mindful exercises. Exercises include: mindful bonsai/waterfall (audio/ visual stimuli), body scan, and sitting meditation.

At first this DVD appears almost too basic, for example in order to explain the basic concepts of mindfulness an image of a Bonsai Tree is used to focus on. In the beginning, this seems difficult and almost feels a little pointless, but as the mind begins to wander, Derek Turesky’s voice gently leads the viewer back to the practice and one begins to understand that this simplicity is in fact both the difficulty and the key to understanding mindfulness. In this light, the Bonsai tree takes on new shades with depth and layers, colours, cells, shapes and individual leaves.

The following exercise focuses on self awareness, using the basic body-scan technique; a very useful tool for those who have not before delved into the world of meditation. As thought and energy is placed on each part of the body, one becomes much more aware. Turesky encourages the viewer to feel the feelings that accompany (aches, pains along with good feelings) with a detached view point and to just observe.

The simple techniques used The Garden of Now make it a great gift or starter course into the world of meditation and mindfulness.
