really hot day and I was on a beach in Australia looking for great images for my collection at Getty Images. And I was looking out at all the thousands of people crowding this beach. Then I noticed this one big black man wearing red Speedos and I was really embarrassed to go ask him if I could take photos of him. But it was beautiful–his black skin and red trunks and the blue sky. It had all the perfect elements of a great photo. I got the courage to ask him and he was one of the nicest guys, and I got a fantastic shot. It’s that inner voice, telling me even though my heart was beating so hard and I was embarrassed to approach him. It’s that inner voice saying, ‘It’s okay, David. It’s okay. It’s okay’. And it just all came together.
I had a recent experience I’ll tell you about. The other day I had to do a chocolate shot for an ad for an electric power company, NESA, and one of the businesses they provide power for is a chocolate company. And this power company’s logo is Passion Powered by NESA. So I had to get a passionate shot of chocolate! I had this pot of melted chocolate and I looked at it for hours and hours. It looked like baby poo! But I was not going to give up finding something passionate in it, because I knew it existed. I had to find it. So I closed my eyes and sort of just swirled the chocolate around with a spoon, you know, and I was humming and almost going off, telling myself to tune into it. I felt I had to tune into it, you know, because I had to get this shot. I couldn’t deliver baby poo! And because I gave myself space to go there, something registered

finally, something opened up. It was like, okay, I’m tuned in and I was swirling the chocolate with the spoon and I felt the urge to just go, go, go, go, and then I heard an inner voice say, ‘Stop turning and flick the spoon up!’ And I did, and then I looked down at the chocolate and it looked like–it was so beautiful, the way it looked, because it looked like there was a big tongue licking through chocolate, dripping saliva, like it loved the chocolate. And I got the shot and the client loved it!

That’s fabulous! Every creative person understands that moment when it all comes together, almost by serendipity! Okay, one last
question. You’ve written that the world is at a tipping point, a crucial moment in history. Your projects are motivated by some sense of wanting to foster togetherness, connectedness, love for one another. What’s your view of the state of the world and how can artists of all kinds contribute to the healing of the world in whatever form that healing may take?
What I believe personally is that creative energy is coming from one place, and people have different ways to get to it and they call it different things... I don’t know if there is a healing component to creativity, but I know I feel more alive when I am being creative. Well, I think there is most definitely a channel through communication and a healing power through any art form whether it’s visual art or music or whatever. I think most definitely that without creativity we are not humans.
