himself. ‘What else can these events mean?’ He sought to discover how could he redefine what had happened to him in a more empowering way. He wondered how could these experiences had fostered his growth and evolution. He examined how he could beset reconnect with his innocence and sense of self- worth. He wondered what he could do in the future that would make him feel proud. He reached a place of remembering that ‘everything is possible’ and that whatever was happening currently in his life was okay, and that if he could direct his love and energy in a positive way, the future could be even better. He decided he’d never give up. As a result, he acquired a new sense of positive expectancy that restored his energy and resolve.
Finally, he directed his attention towards becoming more aware of his thoughts on an everyday basis, for when a negative thinking pattern gets shifted enough times, it changes, and that change becomes permanent. We humans think about 60,000 thoughts in a day, and it is not possible to be conscious of them all. It’s easier to notice the emotions associated with thought patterns. Genuine positive feelings probably indicate that thoughts are self- empowering, not self-defeating. When this man noticed feeling negative emotions, he took the initiative to redirect his energy: to shift his thoughts to doing his best and to reach out to others to both give and receive love. He now understood that negative feelings were merely signals that old defeatist thoughts were trying to creep back in. Alert for them, he now had a strategy of being able to re-run the memory movie that had immediately preceded the feeling so that he could identify which negative belief was behind it. Each time he practiced this strategy, he got better at quieting those clamouring negative thoughts, no matter how inventive, subtle or persistent they were. Because he’d reconnected with his core purpose and what was truly important for him, he found it easy to turn things around and be at peace. He became the ‘hero’ of his own life.
You, too, can be the hero of your life, using these same strategies. When the going gets tough, a hero has the willingness to explore the past, the determination to think differently, the ruthless honesty to look at the reality of the situation, the positive outlook to discover a sense of purpose, and the relentless determination to endure and succeed.
