Of Black Bananas & Fuzzy Oranges

If you’re like most people, you haven’t got a clue about how long refrigerated food really stays fresh and nutritious. We tend to think that if it smells okay and looks good, it’s good to eat. Well, here’s a reality check in terms of a sampling of foods you may have in your refrigerator. These recommendations are not only about food safety, but food quality, for the longer a fresh food is stored, the more nutrients it loses, even when refrigerated.

• Fruit Juices, 3 weeks unopened, up to 10 days opened

• Milk, 1 week • Cream, Half-and-Half, 3-4 days • Eggs, 3-5 weeks • Yogurt, 1-2 weeks • Fresh Fish, 1-2 days • Cooked Fish, 3-4 days

Does Baby Need Sunglasses?

When we think of a fetus nestled in the womb, we imagine a fluid-filled cocoon-like place where sound can penetrate but light can’t. Or so we thought, until Italian researcher Marco Del Guidice, of the University of Turin, asked the questions, “Can light reach the womb, and if

so, how much gets though the uterus?” With the cooperation of mums-to-be who agreed to get naked so he could test his hypothesis, Del Guidice found that the womb is illuminated by ambient light. While only a small amount of ambient light penetrates the uteus, it was enough so that he believes fetuses may actually be able to develop vision and see in their final two months in the womb. However, when a mum-to-be goes out of doors into bright sunlight, the fetus may be bathed in light as strong as that of a typical room illuminated by electricity.

• Minced Meat, 1-2 days • Roasts and Chops (Beef, Pork, Lamb), 3-5 days
