Sakhalin Energy Investments (a company part owned by SHELL) has announced plans to place a major oil rig near a sensitive feeding habitat of the critically endangered Western North Pacific Whales.
There are approximately 130 of the Western North Pacific Whales and just around 30 females of breeding age remain.[1]

The suggested location for new platform is the whale’s primary feeding area and its shallow waters are one of the few places where mother whales can still teach their calves to feed on the sea bed.
A decade ago, Sakhalin Energy researched the proposed area for the third platform and deemed it unsuitable due to unstable clay on the seabed in an earthquake-prone zone.[2]
Masha Vorontsova, Director of International Fund For the Welfare of Animals (IFAW) Russia, said: “We are deeply concerned by the plans of Sakhalin Energy to install the third platform in this area, which is a critical habitat for the survival of the Western grey whale. “
