THE VALUE OF

DIVERSIFICATION If recent stock

by Michael Creasman, CFP

market gyrations resemble a roller- coaster ride to you, bear in mind that diversifying

your holdings can smooth things out. For instance, consider three hypothet- ical portfolios—a diversified one of 70% stocks, 25% bonds, and 5% cash; an all-stock portfolio; and an all-cash portfolio. Between January 2008 and February 2009, the all-stock portfo- lio would have tumbled 48.2% while the diversified portfolio would have declined a more modest 33.9%. Te all-cash portfolio would have declined only 0.02%. However, the all-cash portfolio would have missed market advances. Between March 1, 2009 and April 30, 2009, it would have only increased 0.03% while the stock portfolio would have risen 19.2% and the diversified portfolio would have gone up 11.7%. HINT: A diversified portfolio may

not maximize gains in a rising market, but it will limit losses during a decline. An all-cash portfolio may be safe, but it may not even keep up with infla- tion. Where will you invest your money
