BlackHawks turn in complete performance
The BlackHawks found room to roam on offense Friday night.
By Matt Tate At the beginning of the season,
North Buncombe coach Carey Metts talked about a desire to establish a punishing running game. By that standard, he had to have
liked what he saw Friday (Oct. 1). Te BlackHawks rolled up 245
yards on the ground in their 27-8 vic- tory against McDowell. “We played with a lot of heart, a
lot of togetherness and were united,” Metts said. “We executed better than we did in the Enka game.” Te BlackHawks narrowly lost to
Enka 17-14 on Sept. 24 on a last-sec- ond field goal. Friday’s victory was the Black-
Hawks’ first on-the-field Mountain Athletic Conference victory since 2008. Te Titans forfeited their win against North Buncombe last year due to an illegible player. Adam Davis, who stepped in against
Enka for the injured Devin Calloway, churned out 124 yards on the ground and a touchdown against the Titans. Cole Leighton, who this week trans-
ferred to Owen for personal reasons, also had some timely runs in his last game with the BlackHawks. Quarterback Christian Jewkes only
completed four passes, but two were for touchdowns to Colby Fox and Ben Shelton. Tose two came in the first half,
allowing the BlackHawks to control the clock and pound the ball on the

ground in the second half. “We studied the film real well and
found some holes where we could hurt them,” Metts said. “We’re finally ex- ecuting better to the point where we can get our offense going.” Te BlackHawks (2-5 overall, 1-1
MAC) had a rocky start to the season, but have shown growth and improve- ment in back-to-back weeks against conference foes.
Metts hopes that wave continues
this Friday (Oct. 9) as the BlackHawks travel to Roberson. “I think we can compete with
them,” he said. “We might have a little more heart. I think our kids play a little bit harder.” Te players, too, are feeling confi-
dent in their chances. “We’re looking forward to going over there and getting a W,” Fox said.
Players of the Week
Te following players were chosen as Players of the Week by the NBHS varsity football staff in their recent game against McDowell.
