Children’s book reflects personal tale
By Matt Tate When Lois Chazen travels to a
friend’s ranch near Sebring, Fla., she visits with many former acquaintanc- es.
Tey’re not all human, though. A cardinal she rescued several years
ago and set free on the ranch still visits her and the bond they share was the
inspiration for her children’s book “Loving Ruby.” Chazen was running an Aveda sa-
lon in Sebring when one day she hap- pened upon the hobbled bird. Using guidance from a local wild-
life rescue center, she cared for the bird, named “Ruby,” for more than three months. “Ruby was such a baby,” she said.
“She absolutely trusted me. We built this incredible bond.” Every day for more than two weeks,
Chazen took her to the farm trying to get her again acclimated to the wild. Ruby finally took flight. Chazen admitted the parting broke
her heart, but it inspired her first book. “Tis has been a journey of the
heart,” she said. She has seen Ruby three times
in the last three years at her friends’ home, and they told her that Ruby is known to tap her beak on their win- dow panes. Chazen, a stylist at Aabani in Weav-
erville, said saving animals is her pas- sion and purpose. “Raising consciousness for humans
