Show report: SMTAI attracts a loyal following
Show report: SMTAI attracts a loyal following
The community spirit that is synonymous with the SMTA was out in force at the recent SMTA International event in Orlando, Florida. The aisles were busy, sessions packed and exhibitors were selling equipment off their booths.
During the show, Global SMT & Packag- ing held two events. The Global Tech- nology Awards recognized all the latest innovations from the past 12 months in a short ceremony on the Tuesday morning. Then on Wednesday afternoon we struck a lighter note with a Celebrity Jeopardy contest. Both events can be viewed online at
tv.globalsmt.net. On the show floor, I spoke with a num- ber of suppliers who were reporting strong sales activity in general. Mentor Graphics, Valor Division are now six months into the integration process and are already finding many benefits by working with the existing installed base of Mentor Graphics customers to introduce them to the many strengths of the Valor software suite. In the past quarter alone they have attracted 57 new customers. Data I/O intro- duced a Siemens X and SX compat- ible version of their famous Roadrunner plug-in programmer and feeder. They also introduced a MYDA- TA compatible version. One of the many ant-counterfeiting features of the Data I/O system is the ability to encrypt data and match it to the Roadrunner serial number,
which can then decrypt the files and allow it to program a predetermined number of boards. The company’s new Superboost software enhancement has the ability to program larger than 4GB files, a useful requirement, especially for GPS customers who typically use 8-16 GB file sizes.
Zestron exhibited a new alkaline clean-
ing product called AC207. The AC207 contains a more gentle inhibitor that limits oxidization, for use with more sensi- tive metals such as electroless nickel and cadmium. KIC are working on a new profiler
product that is easier and simpler to use. The new system will not have all the bells and whistles of the KIC mainstream profil- ers, but it will generate sufficient informa- tion to give customers a degree of confi- dence that their oven profiles are in spec. Bliss Industries introduced a new
version of their FLEX conveyor, built on
a lighter duty chassis with smaller rollers. The redesigned system is 25% cheaper than the previous version. Krayden displayed a new range of
thermal greases that do not pump out and have > 0.7 thermal conductivity.
STI Electronics introduced a new SIR
testing system to their test services depart- ment. The new system allows the probes to be inserted into the leaves on a package to detect minute changes in insulation resistance. STI have also just passed their medical electronics audit and are currently preparing for AS9100 ISO. Acculogic has a new software program
that can reverse engineer PC designs. It uses the prober to learn networks then rebuilds the product using the BOM list.
SMTAI moves to Fort Worth, Texas next year, where it will share dates with the Solar Power show in Dallas, Texas. It looks like next September/October in Texas is going to be busy. Buy your tickets now!
