Jumo refines its strategy for quality-driven growth
Fulda, Germany-based Jumo is a successful third-generation manufacturer of measure- ment and control technology systems that are used worldwide in various industrial sectors and application areas to measure, control and record physical properties, such as pressure, temperature and pH-value. Jumo’s top priorities are quality assur- ance and cooperative electronics manu- facturing services (EMS). The company’s focus on high product quality means relying exclusively on state-of-the-art systems engineering to facilitate highly flexible production flows.
Flexible manufacturing of electronics assemblies “For more than 20 years our expertise has enabled us to offer top-quality products in the EMS area,” said Martin Rößner, Jumo’s production SMT team leader in the Electronics Assemblies division. “Jumo sees itself as a competent EMS partner. From our perspective, growth is a result of quality. This leads to long-term customer loyalty. Our products are being used in industrial electronics as well as in medical,
sensor and automotive applications. We focus on safety technology, particularly in automotive applications where IPC class III requirements have become more stringent regarding durability and running time.” Modern machinery allows for manufac-
turing of flexible lot sizes, from individual prototypes to small and medium-sized series to customized or just-in-time mass produc- tion.
For the skilled EMS provider, produc- tion runs six days per week in three shifts. A product range comprising 2,000 different SMD assemblies is handled by three SMD lines. Over the course of a year, the com- pany assembles nearly 100 million SMD components.
The 5D manufacturing strategy “We set ourselves apart by coordinating electronics assemblies with our customers for optimum results,” said Hubert Ebert, Product Line Leader in the Electronic Assemblies division. “Not only does this en- compass zero-defect production, which re- quires reliable soldering machines in terms of process technology, but it also starts with
design for manufacturing (DFM).” Customers receive extensive advice
right from the early design stages. One criterion is the 5D strategy:
DFA—Design for Assembly DFM—Design for Manufacture DFT—Design for Testability DFR—Design for Reliability DFE—Design for Environment
Technological System Partner Jumo’s focus on high product quality and highly flexible production flows led to a recent restructuring of its electronics manu- facturing department and a search for two new reflow soldering systems. Jumo conducted extensive benchmark
testing of various types of machines from a number of manufacturers, using a complex reflow test board with thermocouple elements as a reference. Jumo is a market leader in measuring heat flow volume with its own DKD (Deutscher Kalibrierdienst, accredited German calibration authority) test center, where thermocouple elements can be calibrated with meticulous accuracy. The benchmark criteria for purchase
SMD assembly at Jumo is handled by three SMD lines.
