2010 Rep & Distributor Review

“The first and second quarter of 2010 looked like an investment boom, which we haven’t experienced in the last 10 years.”

INTERCEM KOREA Ltd. intercem.co.kr

How is business in your territory and how do you see the market performing in 2011? 2010 was a year of significant growth, which was so different from those of last several years. The first and second quarter of 2010 looked like an investment boom, which we haven’t experienced in the last 10 years. The major investment area was in IT industries, especially the LED, LCD, solar, and semiconductor packaging industries. This booming in a short period of time caused lots of machine delivery issues, but the market keeps the cost-sensitive requirements in every aspect of raw material and capital equipment, so many localized equipments vendors have been very successful this year. 2011 will not be a robust growth year. We hope for not too much downturn.

INTERCEM KOREA Ltd. Covering South Korea

Lines: ICON, Assembléon, Heller, YESTech, Stoelting, Kester, Kyzen, KIC, Palomar, V-Tek

What new technologies have you seen emerging in your territory? There has been lot of investment into the LED and solar cell industries this year. The lighting business, using LED technologies, seem to apply to many different areas, including building, advertisement and road construction, as well as the white electronic industries. And the flip-chip technologies application will be expanded to many different package device of semiconductor, switching the conventional wire-bond technology. Lots of R&D efforts to apply F/C technology and embed-PCB application will be successfully achieved in many different areas. And many raw materials used in packaging and SMT will be resourced from the local [South Korea] market by the driving efforts from several big players in Korea.

“Our customer forecast and their business indicate that the market in 2011 will be better than this year, but it is still far behind the peak of 2000.”

How is business in your territory and how do you see the market performing in 2011? The electronic industry in China has picked up to an acceptable and profitable level, although the forecast has stayed in a short term for years. Our customer forecast and their business indicate that the market in 2011 will be better than this year, but it is still far behind the peak of 2000. The main driver of business in the electronic industry is the buying behavior of consumers in the USA, which needs to take a couple of years at least to return the consumption level of before the economic crisis.

What new technologies have you seen emerging in your territory? In China, a world manufacturing hub, any emerging technologies in electronic manufacturing can be found. Solar and energy products are the hottest emerging technologies that many factories make in China. Although package on package and 0201 chips are not the new, emerging technologies in SMT, the 0201 chip is being widely used in the mass production in China. On the other hand, miniaturization is one of the emerging technologies in electronic industry. The higher the component density and the smaller the board size, the more of a challenge it is to the conventional reflow soldering technology. Vapor phase reflow soldering will be the solution for this trend of electronic products.
