2010 Rep & Distributor Review All in all, things look positive for 2011, and we remain optimistic.
What new technologies have you seen emerging in your territory? With lead-free soldering, complicated boards and energy savings, we are seeing a serious interest in vapor phase. People are looking for a more efficient way of reflowing boards and eliminating nitrogen. Also, new ways of printing 01005 and .3 mm pitch are being evaluated. The use
of a “Patented Vibrating Squeegee” in the printing process is being pursued as a standard in the printing process. Incorporation of laser solder paste inspection into the printer is starting to be used by the market. There are a lot of interesting technologies emerging ahead in 2011.
“R & D investment remains strong.”

How is business in your territory and how do you see the market performing in 2011? Whilst the perception is that the Australian economy is strong by world standards, reality is that the mining industry covers flaws in other industry sectors. Companies fortunate enough to service the mining industry are prospering whilst things still remain on the decline for those manufacturing for general industry. We see no reason for this to change in 2011; however with a strong installed base in the military and government sector Upton Australia remains stable in an ever-maturing market and we look forward to growth in 2011 with our recently acquired distributorships, EVS, Metcal & OK International.

What new technologies have you seen emerging in your territory? We see a continual decline in large scale manufacturing in Australia, but R & D investment remains strong, fuelling a surprisingly large niche industry of start-ups & micro manufacturing. With the increasing use of BGA devices in consumer electronics, rework and repair is viewed with higher importance. Upton Australia is very well positioned to service this growing market. Precision cleaning with new style vapour phase cleaners will also have an impact. Safe chemistries are now available, making VP degreasing/cleaning a much more economical option. Australia’s position on environmental issues has been strong. Any advancement made to this end will be quickly adopted. ISO 14001 (Reduce, Reuse and Recycle) should have manufacturers thinking about their environmental footprint.
“Frankly speaking, it’s been an OK year. ” WKK

How is business in your territory and how do you see the market performing in 2011? 2010 has not been a really great year, but I guess that everyone has been more or less happy after the disaster that we had in 2009. Frankly speaking, it’s been an OK year. Many factories do not have the large orders that they used to have from the U.S., so everyone has been very careful with any new investments. As to 2011, it’s early to tell, but I think it will be more or less similar to what we have seen in 2010. There will be a series of new products that will launch, such as new and improved smart phones and new iPad type devices, which should launch next year. Overall things really won’t pick up as long at there is uncertainty in the U.S. and European markets. The U.S. economy has yet to really rebound, and until that happens things will continue to be sluggish.

What new technologies have you seen emerging in your territory? That’s never an easy question to answer as technology continues to evolve. I think the major things we will see in 2011 are smaller and faster components, an improvement in battery life devices and more use of embedded devices.
