THE WEIRS TIMES, Thursday, October 28, 2010 Formerly & Everywhere! RFD# to the gulf stream waters 3 to the New York Island by Lorrie Baird WE NEED A GPS ON BIKE RIDES by Lorrie Baird So I walked down to the

mail kiosk in our new com- munity and the first thing I see posted there is a sign that reads: “Please Don’t Feed the Bears!” It made me feel right at home; as if the bears that lived in our backyard in New Hampshire retired and migrated down here. Who knows if warm weather bears hibernate? The av- erage fall temperature is in the low 80s. Let me put it this way, while sleeping at night is comfortable, I wouldn’t want to do it in a fur coat. “Resort Living Bordering

on the Wild” is our Glen Lakes marketing mantra (our community is sur- rounded by a large nature preserve with an Indian name about a mile long that sounds something like “Winnipesaukee.”) Translation: “bear in your swimming pool.” Only kid- ding. But last Christmas a friend did discover a Florida panther sitting out

in front of her lanai with an eye on the bobbing snowman she had floating in her pool. Not to worry. Glen Lakes has a team of security guards patrolling our streets making sure the local wildlife behaves itself. They don’t call this “The Nature Coast” for nothing. Last Saturday there was

no wildlife in the pool when we were invited to Oktoberfest, a neighbor- hood party held at our community swimming pool across the street. Our neighbor next door hails from Exeter, and so does my husband. We met another couple who sum- mer in Melvin Village and another who frequently vacation on Winnipesau- kee. We may have left New Hampshire for the winter, but New Hampshire hasn’t left us. We drank German beer and toasted New Hampshire. We devoured brats. We sang songs to the Old Country and some of us even ran around in lederhosen and hats with feathers in them. Folks down here really know how to party.

I have to admit that we

do miss New Hampshire’s gorgeous fall foliage. The foliage here is all con- fused. Maples don’t turn red until January and there’s one tree that obvi- ously doesn’t know what to do with itself this time

So far we’ve learned that if we bear left all the way we will eventually end up back at our little village. To give you an idea of

how big this place is, when we went to karaoke at The Club last week we were asked where we live.

of year; it’s a patchwork quilt of bright red, yellow and green all at the same time. Those trees stick out amongst all the greenery like Barbie at a Weight Watcher’s convention. Every night we take a bi-

cycle ride around our new community. We are still getting lost…I think it’s all the braking we have to do for the Sand Hill Cranes.

“Glen Hills.”

“Where?,” she asked. “Glen Hills.” She smiled at me conde- scendingly and reminded this neighborhood newbie that the community is called “Glen Lakes,” not Glen Hills. “I know…I live in Glen

Hills in Glen Lakes,” I said. “I’ve been here for five

much wildlife wandering around. They’re all look- ing for each other.
