TWO OUTINGS—ONE EASIER, ONE TOUGHER Mount Waumbek Sharon and Sarah were

eager to go hiking with us. I believe the 4,000 footer list is irresistible and addictive. Since our last hike was Caps Ridge I decided to pick an easier trail with good footing, no water crossings and no scrambling on all fours. Waumbek via Starr King immediately came to mind and maybe they would still want to hike with us again the following week- end.

The trailhead is located

off of Route 2 on Starr King Road in Jefferson, NH. On the way to the small parking area there is a nasty deep water bar that should not be crossed if your car doesn’t have high clearance. I can’t recall ever seeing a water bar as hazardous as this one. Parking somewhere else might be a smart choice. We took off right from

the parking lot at a quick pace. We took turns lead- ing but our small group was in a racing mood. The uphill is moderate, not too steep but it does take plenty of effort. Finally someone cried uncle and we took a break. I do recall

the old cabin opening. I poked around the sum- mit in the scrubby trees but I couldn’t find a better vantage. I remember some fine vistas but the rapid tree growth has blocked it all. Someone should lug a chainsaw and go to work. Two men arrived after

flying up the trail and looked at us and asked which way the trail went and we all pointed at the arrow that read trail. They immediately took off and it struck us as funny. We zipped over the next

mile to Mount Waumbek’s summit. The enchanting trail toured through trees covered with green moss. Waumbek’s summit is

asking why we were hik- ing so fast. We continued at a more reasonable pace and we were able to enjoy the forest with the tree’s beautiful leaves sporting their new fall colors. On top of Starr King we attempted to see through the tops of the trees and there is no longer a view from the USGS marker or
