have to close the pool to do this. The pool clarity and air quality improved immediately and was noticed and commented on by the members. The removal of chlorine has had a positive effect on the staff and their daily routine.”

Said Celina Brown from PoolSan: ”Our emphasis is always that PoolSan has been shown to be as effective as chlorine and is the perfect product for commercial sites that want to reduce their hazardous chemical usage and improve the quality of their pool water.”

Other alternatives available include Hydropath Technology’s AquaKLEAR electronic water treatment system, which will help reduce cleaning time and provides a number of additional benefits, including less chlorine use, reduced backwashing and the elimination of the need for coagulants.

Next year could see a major change in the way REACH, the new European Community Regulation on chemicals and their safe use considers swimming pool chemicals.

A policy meeting is due to report soon on trends against high uses of chlorine in pools. It is thought to support more research into chlorine alternatives and to provide access for funding for safer options.

REACH deals with the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemical substances.

The use of chlorine is known to be “on the agenda” of both the EU and the World Health Organisation.

“There is no concern about being anti chlorine and REACH has to look at things over a longer period but it is safe to say that natural alternatives, even those which may need a chlorine boost are more likely to be favoured over the next five years” said an EU statement. The Pure+Oxygen system came on to the market as a direct plea of many swimmers looking for an alternative to traditional chlorine or bromine based solutions. The product is a result of extensive research and development to create a copper and oxygen ionisation product. Although not fully chlorine free, the Pure+Oxygen system operates at a similar level to tap water. This eliminates all the problems associated with the chemical in both the pool water and at the pool side when handling the chemicals. Within the specially designed mixing chamber, a low voltage electrical charge is

passed between copper and titanium plates to produce copper ions and active oxygen respectively.

In basic terms the copper ions released into the water then act as a natural biocide for any algae growth that may occur, whilst the super oxygenated water destroys harmful bacteria. Pure+Oxygen has proved itself in a growing number of pools. Developing on the success of this product the company has developed Pure+Heat for economical pool water heating and Pure+Test to ensure chemical balance with swimming pools.

UV systems are increasing popular. Higher level of investment is needed but the lower chlorine options are satisfying the needs of more commercial pool owners than ever. UV specialists Hanovia with 80 years’ experience in developing and manufacturing UV products for the non-chemical treatment of water now say their experience is of commercial pools seeing the ultraviolet system as the only answer to long term water treatment. UV’s role is a growing one which is a supplement to chlorine and still requires a residual of chlorine in the water but it does significantly allow pools to be run on significantly lower levels of chlorine.

The Aligator Ionisation System will reduce chemical usage by up to 80%

The trend is allowing the company to install systems successfully worldwide.

Franklin Sport Swim and Fitness centre’s two indoor pools in New Zealand have been transformed since the owners installed two Hanovia systems. Combined chlorine (chloramine) levels in the 25 metre main pool and the children’s pool are now below 0.2ppm and the operators are also making significant savings on water replacement. The Hanovia UV systems were installed by Davey Water Products on behalf of Franklin District Council and Community Leisure Management in the town of Pukekohe, south of Auckland.

“Our main purpose for installing the systems was to control chloramines, which are responsible for the distinctive, and at times overwhelming, ‘chlorine’ smell associated with indoor chlorinated pools,” said Franklin District Council’s Property Manager Gwyn De Arth. “Chloramines cause sore eyes and irritated skin and create a very corrosive environment for pool equipment – they are in fact a major cause of rust within indoor pool complexes. Since the system was installed people have really noticed the difference and many visitors have commented on the dramatically improved environment,” he continued.
