One statistic suggests that within a few years 70% of all outdoor pools in the UK could have a pool enclosure over them. The figure may be optimistic but the benefits of all year round swimming and guaranteed safety makes the enclosure market appeal to UK pool owners large and small, private and commercial

t may seem obvious but one of the biggest changes in the mindset of swimming pool owners over the past few years is the simple fact they want to use them more. All year round if possible.

That is one reason why you won’t find many who are surprised about the rapid and continuing expansion of the pool enclosure market within the specialist swimming pool industry. If you add in the growing importance of safety which pool enclosures bring, then it becomes clear why they offer such an attractive option for pools large and small, private and commercial.

A pool enclosure of whatever size, shape and cost is a natural cost effective solution for pool owners.

Enclosure specialist companies say the market continues to grow. Last year saw sales higher than the previous year. Enquiries were based on better quality than quantity which is what the industry is looking for.

It’s always difficult to try and categorise a market – there’s too many overlaps but three parts of the pool enclosure market are now distinct. At the top of the market there’s the commercial pool, often a school or community outdoor pool which is looking to make the most of their investment by building a designed structure to provide a permanent cover.

Estelle Michaels from Arqualand says the market is demanding quality. Pool enclosures now, she says, are becoming much more structurally demanding and therefore often tie the client into a lot of building regulations and procurement documentation.

“We are finding more and more that there needs to be the proper service to the client as enclosures become more architecturally demanding.” She stressed the importance of materials in building structures – polycarbonates not acrylic or fibreglass; aluminium not galvanised iron. The product range at Arqualand suits those with security in mind as the safety aspects of enclosures becomes a growing issue for pool owners. Estelle explained the structures are made from the same material as that used to make police riot shields, and it is reportedly 200 times stronger than glass. Each has a lockable door and windows that only open from the inside. Both fixed and telescopic designs are available, and in addition to

Graham Kelsey from Summit Leisure says these enclosures are really in demand.

“This sector has been growing strongly and continues to do so. There’s a real desire for schools especially to make the most of an outdoor pool and turn it into much more of an asset by providing all year swimming – not just for a few months.”
