WINDERMERE SWIM CANCELLED

The British Gas Great North Swim planned for early September had to be cancelled this year due to blue-green algae. The swim was due to take place at Windermere. Organisers said the appearance of the algae in the water posed a safety risk to what is one of the high profile charity swims in the calendar. The decision was taken by the Event Safety Group in the interests of the safety of swimmers after further stringent water quality checks were completed.

WATERCO PRE-FILTER WINS SPLASH! ENVIRONMENTAL AWARD

The major product award, at the SPLASH! Environmental Product of the Year went to Waterco for their MultiCyclone pre-filter. The SPLASH! Environmental awards in Australia are the world’s only environmental awards for the swimming pool, spa and aquatics industries and were presented at a gala dinner on the Gold Coast.

With 57 entries, the awards are gaining substantially in popularity, and it was also clear that many great advances had been made particularly by manufacturers. “This is a great achievement for Waterco and an award that we are extremely proud of,” comments Tony Fisher, Waterco Europe. “We have worked hard to design and promote environmentally friendly products and this award is great recognition of all the hard work.” MultiCyclone is an innovation which filters the water prior to it going to the main filters, reducing the

load on the filter and therefore the amount of backwashing required. The average sand filter may use more than 20,000 litres for backwashing each year. This can be vastly reduced by using the MultiCyclone pre-filter, which itself only needs 15 litres of water to purge. Potential water savings are estimated at about 7,000 litres per

LANDLOCKED COUNTY IS SWIMMING NUMBER ONE

Where do you think the number one county for swimming is?

Cornwall, Norfolk or Sussex, with their seaside resorts and long stretches of beach?

Well, actually, it’s landlocked Leicestershire – about as far from the sea as you can get.

A new survey shows the county boasts more adult swimmers than any other part of England.

According to the results about 76,400 adults swim at least once a week in Leicestershire and Rutland – equal to 9.5% of the population. The figure is well above the national average of 7.7% and a big leap since 2006 when the figure was below the national average at around 60,000 regular swimmers. The latest figures come from Sport England’s Active People Survey, which measured adult participation in sport in the year to April. A total of 5,000 people from Leicestershire and Rutland – including 1,000 in the city – were asked if they had swum four or more times in the last four weeks. The

results were then applied across the whole population.

Trevor Henson, Chairman of Braunstone Swimming Club, said: “Leicestershire could do with more pools – if you want a 50m pool you have to go to Loughborough, and Melton’s pool is only five lanes, so there is a shortage of quality pools, and for clubs like ours there’s a shortage of time in the water. But the pools we have are popular and clubs are well supported.”

Lindsay Taylor, Secretary of Leicester Masters Swimming Club, said: “It’s brilliant, but it’s not clear how it’s come about. Considering the lack of pools it’s quite something. We miss St Margaret’s pool and we now have no 50m pool in Leicester.”

The East Midlands branch of the ASA, the governing body for swimming, attributed Leicestershire’s rise to number one to the work of swimming associations, councils and pool operators encouraging more people to get down to their local pool.

year for an average pool.

The judges were impressed by the fact that the product was economically priced and something most existing pool owners could benefit from.
