BASILDON TO HOST THE FIRST 50 METRE POOL IN ESSEX
Basildon has claimed its £38m sporting village will be the best public sports venue in Essex when it is opened for business in April next year. When completed, the sporting complex will contain the county’s first 50 metre swimming pool, which can be split into two 25m pools. There will also be a
gymnastics centre, eight-court sports hall, fitness suite, climbing wall, floodlit five-a- side football pitches, athletics grandstand with 750 seats, a creche and a cafe.
ROCHDALE PLANS UNDER WAY
Rochdale Borough Council has appointed a contractor to design and build the new leisure centre, in Rochdale town centre plans for which include two swimming pools. Willmott Dixon Construction have been appointed to deliver the £10.8m project and work is now underway to submit a full planning application. Work is due to start on site in November.
US GET TOP TRAINING POOL
Britain’s Olympic swimming team must find a new training venue for the 2012 build-up after the US beat them to the right to use London Fields lido, the capital’s only 50- metre heated outdoor pool. Team GB, including Olympic gold medallist Rebecca Adlington, will now have to share pools with other nations in the Olympic Park. One coach warned the pool could help give the US the edge. Sibel Izzet said: “If you train in the open air, there’s much more oxygen.”

UV SYSTEM MAKES LEARNING TO SWIM A MORE PLEASANT TASK
A new Hanovia UV water treatment system installed in the ‘Learn to Swim’ pool at AC Baths in Taupo in New Zealand has made swimming a more pleasant experience for babies, children and instructors.
“Since we installed the UV system combined chlorine levels have been reduced from as much as 1.2ppm to 0.1 ppm or even less,” said bath’s manager Virginia Munro. “The pool is now much nicer to swim in – the kids don’t come out with sore eyes and smelling of chlorine and the water is also much clearer. Feedback from parents and staff regarding the pool environment has also been very positive.”
Also, the regular replacement of fresh water, commonly required with a standard, chlorine-based treatment regime, is much reduced. “We see this as a positive improvement, not just environmentally but also as a cost saving exercise,” added Ms Munro. Because of the success of the Learn to Swim pool unit, AC Baths ordered a larger Hanovia UV system for the indoor/outdoor leisure pool. UV is well known for reducing

combined chlorines, the unpleasant chemicals formed when chlorine combines with the organic compounds deriving from human use of the water. Combined chlorines are also responsible for cloudy, murky water and are very corrosive to metal building structures.

FREE SWIMFIT SCHEME LAUNCHED IN OXFORD
Swimmers at Oxford pools are being offered a new bespoke coaching programme free of charge. The Swimfit scheme helps pool users of any age and ability create workout sessions specifically tailored to their needs. The programme works through a combination of poolside information cards, web based monitoring and weekly sessions run by a professional trainer. Mark Lygo, Oxford City Council’s board member for sport, play and school liaison, said: “Swimming is a great way to keep fit but it is also good fun as the whole family can go together. This Swimfit programme can help people who want to lose weight and tone up. It also gives them the opportunity to structure their swimming sessions.”
