THIRTEEN NEW WORKSHOPS DOMINATE THE 2011 LECTURE PROGRAMME


The 2011 workshop and demonstration programme alongside SPATEX looks to be one of the most innovative and practical in years – with new speakers and new subject areas


T


hirteen new workshops and demonstrations are included at SPATEX 2011 next February in one of the most innovative programmes of lectures to be held alongside the Brighton exhibition. Exhibition organisers all over the world now realise workshop programmes are a vital part of the attraction to visitors and in recent years SPATEX has been working hard to introduce new and relevant subjects into its programme. The three days of workshops and demonstrations has been organised by the Institute of Swimming Pool Engineers on behalf of SPATEX with the aim of covering key industry issues such as energy conservation water testing and pool construction. Workshops are also included looking at key market areas such as heat pumps and the fast growing sauna and steam market.

10.45am: DETECTING LEAKS IN SWIMMING POOLS


This introductory session will let you know how to go about locating leaks using the latest technology. Selwyn Mindel FISPE


12.15pm: INSULATION,


WATERPROOFING AND CRACK REPAIRS Concrete pools require specialist products and experienced sub contractors and this workshop looks at the opportunities and demands they make on pool builders. Alan Pugh FISPE (30 minute session)


1.00pm: WHAT WE DO WELL AND WHAT WE DO BADLY


Good practices ensuring compliance with law and the results of non-compliance. (A free CD will be given to all delegates to help compliance.) Allen Wilson FISPE (1 hour session)


2.15pm: FITTING VINYL POOL LINERS A pool engineers’ guide. Will Dando MISPE


3.00pm: PIPEWORK DEMONSTRATION Cutting, solvent welding ABS & PVC, threaded and compression fittings etc. David Dahl MISPE


3.45pm: PUMP & FILTER SERVICING A practical demonstration of a pump strip-down including: how to change the mechanical seal, followed by a filter strip-down and re-build including: changing the bulkheads, sand, laterals and drain plug. Chris Carr FISPE and Ray Burt FISPE (1 hour session)


SUNDAY 10.00am: GOT YOUR POOL COVERED?


The importance of heat and energy conservation, insulation and good housekeeping of swimming pools. Will Dando MISPE


10.45am: SAUNA & STEAM Design considerations and market trends – a look at one of the most design led and fastest growing sectors of the wet leisure industry. Shaun Adams MISPE


11.30am: KEEPING YOUR BALANCE An overview of balanced water. Colin Day MISPE


12.15pm: FILTER & PIPEWORK SIZING The correct way to calculate the circulation pipe- work & filters for domestic & commercial pools. Chris Carr FISPE (30 minute session)


1.00pm: SAFE OPERATION OF POOLS & SPAS Monitoring safe systems, what is available and best practice. (A free CD will be given to all delegates.) Allen Wilson FISPE (1 hour session)


2.15pm: HEAVY-DUTY POOL LINING: WHAT, WHERE AND WHY?


The differences and advantages over standard liners and other traditional finishes, covering: shell preparation, pool features (such as steps, tracks and pits for automatic covers) and deck level pools. This demonstration will be relevant to domestic and commercial installations. Mike Cramp MISPE


3.00pm: HEAT PUMPS – APPLICATIONS BEYOND THE OUTDOOR POOL Principles of operation. Indoor pool direct water heating using heat pumps. Indoor pool indirect space heating using heat pumps. Commercial pool heat pumps. Government funding. Richard Carrington MISPE (30 minute session)


3.45pm: ARE YOU READY TO WRITE WINNING BIDS?


Most tenders are lost before you even start writing. In this presentation the focus is on what you must do to make sure that you are ready to bid. Tim Colman (1 hour session)


MONDAY 10.15am to 11.15am: A QUICK GUIDE TO


GOOD SWIMMING POOL CONSTRUCTION The choices available to a customer – including the advantages, disadvantages, problems and pitfalls. Alan Pugh FISPE and Ian Betts FISPE


11.45am to 12.45pm: WATER TESTING DEMONSTRATION


Good practice in water testing. This session will show how to perform the main water tests required for good quality pool water, and will give delegates the opportunity to participate in water testing on a variety of samples. Colin Day, MISPE


1.15pm to 2.15pm: HOT TUBS: WHAT IS LURKING BENEATH THE SURFACE? An overview of the risks to health from hot tubs and spa pools including emerging problems with environmental mycobacteria and how to control them. Dr Susanne Lee PhD BSc FRSPH FIFST MIBiol CBiol MWMSoc MRCSHC
