David Cameron discusses the installation of renewable energy technology with Chipping Norton Lido Trustee and Certikin Commercial Manager Steve Nelson
Certikin’s Commercial Manager and Chipping Norton Lido Trustee Steve Nelson recently spent an afternoon with the Prime Minister, David Cameron, extolling the virtues of green energy efficient equipment, examples of which have recently been installed at Chipping Norton Lido. Steve showed the refurbished plant room and renewable energy
installation which is at the centre of the Lido’s two year restoration project. Alongside ground source heating and solar photovoltaic panels is an array of Certikin’s leading energy saving products including two Genie gas condensing boilers and a Certikin North thermal cover as well as Calpeda pumps, Bobbin Wound SLX filters, Cepex

Steve said: “The Prime Minister was interested in seeing for himself the massive savings that can be made by installing energy efficient equipment and renewable energy technology.” David Cameron, who is a long time supporter of the pool, said: “It shows that going green can actually save you money, as well as helping save the planet.” He complimented the organisation on meeting the needs of local people, saying, “There’s a social aspect to this enterprise which is about helping the elderly by making sure they can go on swimming, getting children swimming, training lifeguards and generally having a good, useful social purpose.”
He praised everyone who had been involved in saving the pool. “I’ve always thought this is a great local facility and I remember the threat of its closure and how bad that would have been for Chipping Norton. I think that the people who have taken it on and run it have done a fantastic job.”
NEW POOL GETS AN UNEXPECTED FIRST USER
The first swim in a newly built pool is always a memorable one for the customer preferably shared with friends and family. But, for the Cuthbert family of Norfolk, the ‘christening’ of their pool was even more momentous… in the shape of an uninvited guest!
“The first to use the pool was a pony, Whisky, who escaped from the paddock and not realising that the dark green winter cover hid the new pool, galloped over it and landed right in the middle!” says Ali Cuthbert. “He ripped the cover and the liner but fortunately did no lasting damage to himself. After
much splashing he managed to stagger out of the Roman End!” The pool builders, Cascade Pools Ltd of East Anglia patched up the liner free of charge! The pool was fitted with a Calorex heat pump so his dunk in the water was at least a warm one. “Cascade Pools (EA) Ltd have been fitting and recommending Calorex Heat Pumps for the last 20 years,” says Lynne Edwards of Cascade. “It is such an efficient form of heating a pool especially in today’s economic climate when the cost of electricity, gas and oil fluctuate as often as our Great British Summer Weather!” Ali Cuthbert says: “We use the
pool most days from the end of May through to the end of September and the Calorex unit does an excellent job of keeping the pool at a constant warm temperature.” “With four children, the pool is rarely empty in the summer months. It has made entertaining great fun in the summer and we often invite friends over for lunch and a swim. The pool is inviting, even if the weather isn’t! We wouldn’t be without it,” adds Ali.

PWTAG LOOKS TO PROVIDE FINANCIAL STABILITY
The executive committee of PWTAG (Pool Water Treatment Advisory Group) has been looking at mechanisms to provide long term financial stability to the group, given dwindling membership subscriptions. In a Chair’s report, Janice Calvert says that 2009/10 has been a busy year.
“Our time has been dedicated mainly to the consolidation of PWTAG’s position and laying foundation stones for the future. To this end, an executive committee was formed to develop the group’s strategy and address mechanisms for the generation of income to ensure the group’s survival. This has resulted in the development and consolidation of PWTAG Ltd, the production of memorandum and articles of association and development of the membership scheme to enable all members to participate in an effective manner without compromising the position of their representative body. “A new prospectus is being formulated as an aid to promoting the group’s activities, and this will be published shortly. This has involved the development of the website to allow the sale of technical literature. Draft technical notes are being produced on salient topics. We are also looking at the production of smaller books for other markets, which will be based on the guidelines in our influential 2005 book, Swimming Pool Water.” She reports that PWTAG has been progressing the launch of the international research forum which developed during the 2009 International Pool & Spa Conference. “A list of 100 members has been created. The aim is to have the forum established on PWTAG’s website before next year’s conference in Portugal.”
