MINNIE DRIVER PITCHES IN TO SAVE HISTORIC LIDO

40-year-old Good Will Hunting star said: “We are on a mission to save the last Lido in Wales! It’s in Bryn Amman and it is fantastic.” She later suggested ideas to fundraise for the lido, including holding a charity screening of the film and taking part in a charity gig. The council said it made the decision to close the pool because of “health and safety”. It said bringing the outdoor pool up to scratch for the film would have cost more than £100,000.

Hollywood star Minnie Driver has weighed in on a debate over the future of one of Wales’ last open-air swimming pools.

The actress launched a campaign via Twitter to save the 80-year-old Brynaman Lido in Carmarthenshire. The working lido was to be used

Hunky Dory location manager Chris Hill claimed the lido was “central” to the film’s opening scene. That’s how much we wanted to film there. It’s so unique.

“The council missed a golden opportunity – they really shot themselves in the foot.”

It is believed to be one of the last open-air pools in Wales.

£60,000 RENOVATION OF WIMBLEDON POOL

The London Swimming Pool Company has completed a £60,000 transformation of a pool in Wimbledon which was achieved in eight weeks. The pool was in a neglected state when the renovation project began. The sequence of the project work started with filling in the step side and opening up the Roman end to reshape this 9 x 4.5 metre pool, which was initially built in the 1970s. The pool shell was re-rendered and re-tiled and the coping stones were replaced and child friendly rounded corner stones were added. Skimmers and stainless steel fittings were replaced and LED lights were fitted. The plant room was completely refurbished and most of the plant was replaced including an electrical panel by Electair, a Laars gas boiler, new filters and pumps and some new pipe work was laid. To finish off a new safety cover from Paragon pools was installed and the company also carried out all the paving of the terrace area.

Before and after – the £60,000 renovation of a pool built in the 1970s took eight weeks.
