TWO POOLS INTO ONE AT OXFORD
Two public swimming pools in Oxford are being closed by the council and replaced by one larger pool. Oxford City Council voted to go ahead with the plans to shut Blackbird Leys and Temple Cowley because the pools are said to be outdated and too expensive to run. If sufficient funding is in place, the new pool will be built on a site adjoining Blackbird Leys Leisure Centre. Ian Smith, from the City of Oxford Swimming Club said: “We are actually quite relieved with the decision because the alternatives were to close the [Temple Cowley] pool for two years for either a rebuild or a refurbishment. That’s 50% of our pool time taken for two years so that would
essentially, if not put us out of business, it would have made us restructure and downsize.”
STA FORMS ONLINE ALLIANCE
The Swimming Teachers’ Association, STA has formed an alliance with CoachesInfo Ltd, an online educational resource for the swimming teaching and coaching profession. CoachesInfo was founded by Professor Ross Sanders to ‘bridge the gap between the science of swimming and its practice by translating recent research into a coach friendly language’. STA members will benefit from the database of information as well as the latest educational research and news related to the sport of swimming. STA members will also have the opportunity to contribute to the site and to interact with swimming scientists, teachers, and coaches.

SPORTS STAR GETS HIS POOL AND HIS PRIVACY!
When Certikin were asked to install a new Riviera Pool at the home of a celebrity they were sworn to secrecy. But one clue for the glamour pool installation was the fact that the pool is decorated with a Manchester City Football Club logo.
Having been in the pool trade for 20 years, Managing Director of European Pool & Spa Ltd, Derek Huxley knows about a quality pool so when he was approached by the well known sportsman to create a stunning indoor pool as quickly as possible without any compromise on quality he chose Riviera.
“The Riviera was an easy choice as it is the smartest and most high spec one-piece pool in the market place,” says Derek. “The customer asked for a pool designed first and foremost for relaxation for his young family. The 10m long Riviera Classic Rom with Roman End and the option of a built in roller shutter cover and constant
depth, coupled with its speed of installation, fitted the bill perfectly.” The pool hall boasts a Certikin Premium Architectural Series (PAS) 6 spa – a four to five seater with two loungers.
The pool is decorated with a Manchester City logo using a new concept introduced by Certikin just this year.
Pool Décor Transfers are suitable for lined, tiled or fibreglass finish pools and are simple and effective, making application of a wide range of designs as temporary or permanent as desired. Available in over 20 different pre- printed designs, sized at either 2m x 1m or 1m x 1m, the transfers can also be custom made to practically any design and size.
SUFFOLK POOL SHUTS DOWN FOR RENOVATIONS A Suffolk swimming pool has been forced to shut for nearly two weeks due to improvements costing around £55,000.
Mildenhall Pool is owned by Forest Heath District Council and run by Anglia Community Leisure. The first round of improvements, costing £20,000, includes new ceilings, air conditioning, lighting, heating and ventilation in the changing rooms. Tony Bass, Chief Executive of Anglia Community Leisure, said: “We hope to complete the works without disrupting our swimming lesson programme.”
OPEN DAY IN THE LAKES
Aqua Engineering Systems Ltd held a mid season open day promoting the BAYROL product range on 10 July in The Hydro Hotel, which overlooks the stunning Lake Windermere. The open day took the format of a drop in session throughout the afternoon. BioLab’s Jimmy Lamb attended with colleagues and assisted with a presentation which was repeated throughout the
afternoon. BioLab were also on hand to give advice to end users on the BAYROL range.
Despite the weather, there was a good turn out and many end users took the opportunity to bring along a water sample and check their water treatment regimes were still on track. A range of BAYROL products were available to buy on the day as well as samples for end users to try. The open day was a great chance for Aqua Engineering to catch up with existing customers and meet new customers.
