by Brendan Smith Weirs Times Editor

A couple of months back

I started my “Branding With Brendan” contest here on the pages of The Weirs Times. The contest was in re-

sponse to a marketing program begun by the New Hampshire Department of Travel and Tourism where they gave a boatload of taxpayer dollars to an ad- vertising agency in Ports- mouth who, in turn, gave a boatload of taxpayer dollars to a marketing firm in Florida for them to come up with a “brand” for New Hampshire. In other words, a “thing” which best describes New Hampshire and will in turn get more people to visit because they might want to see or experience this “thing.” I thought that the people

of New Hampshire might be able to just come up with this “thing” ourselves and, at the same time, save a couple of hundred thousand taxpayer dol- lars. I will be paying the winner of my contest ten dollars. This week I am pub-

lishing the top nineteen entries for consideration by you, the people of New Hampshire, as the “thing” that best defines our state. You can vote online on our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ weirstimes or email your choice to me at contest@ weirs.com. For those of you without Internet ac- cess you can mail your vote to: The Weirs Times, PO Box 5458, Weirs, NH. 03247. The voting will stay open until Columbus Day when the winner will be announced. Originally, I was going to choose ten finalists, but I couldn’t quite narrow it down to ten, so I bumped

it up to nineteen. Hey! It’s my contest. There are many folk who

sent in original slogans for New Hampshire but they weren’t really “things” so I couldn’t use them. Lots of you were concerned that the motto “Live Free or Die” was in jeopardy since the Office of Travel and Tourism was pretty adamant that that idea could not be used in the marketing of the state. Maybe they thought that was just too easy. You might notice that “Free- dom” is listed as one of the brands. I thought that was fair although I know the OTT won’t ever accept that one. Some of the clever ideas

for slogans that I received included: “New Hamp- shire: Moosely Run By Loons,” “Don’t Take New Hampshire For Granite,” “Live Free, Die or Roll- over,” “The Dream State,” “New Hampshire – What A State We’re In,” and “New Hampshire – What Hap- pened?” to name a few. I’d like to thank everyone

who sent in entries and, if I was a rich man, I’d give you all ten dollars. The amount of entries I received showed that a nerve was struck in this whole boondoggle

of unnecessary and very expensive marketing at a time that the state should be spending our money more wisely. The OTT claims that this

is a necessary expenditure in keeping the identity if New Hampshire out there for tourists to come to our area. Call me crazy, but

I’ve never seen this state have a busier summer season than the one that has just passed. I think the word has al-

ready gotten out that New Hampshire is just a great place to be, even without a “thing” to identify it. But what do I know? I only live here.
