THE WEIRS TIMES, Thursday, September 16, 2010 REMEMBERING DANIEL WEBSTER IN FRANKLIN
by Fay Mahoney Contributing Writer
Many places and things have
been named for Daniel Webster including Webster Place, Dan- iel Webster Home for Children, Webster Cemetery, the Daniel Webster Highway and Webster Lake and currently the home of the Webster Place Center for Recovering Alcoholics. The Franklin Historical Society
located in the Webster Mansion and Tay House is building a col- lection of memorabilia from the USS Daniel Webster SSBN 626, commissioned April 9, 1964 and decommissioned August 30, 1990. Over the next 100 years and beyond this will be a source of pride as the Franklin Histori- cal Society maintains the history of the Mansion, history of Frank- lin and preserve Franklin arti- facts and a collections/exhibit from the USS Daniel Webster SSBN 626. The Paul Smith School was
scheduled to be named after Daniel Webster, using the sig- nature as he signed documents, “Dan’l Webster” until Dr. Paul Smith, key player on the school

board and during the construc- tion of the school, died. The street to the school is named Daniel Webster Dr. Through time immemorial,
historians will question where Daniel Webster was born: in Salisbury, NH, Franklin, NH or Salisbury, now part of Franklin. Daniel was known as a great
orator in all corners of America. When delivering a speech at the New England Society of New York Dec. 22, 1843, regarding The Landing at Plymouth he was introduced by M. H. Grinnell, Esq., who presided over the din- ner and afternoon session. Mr. Grinnell said: “Daniel Web-
ster, -- the gift of New England to his country, his whole country, and nothing but his country.” According to the book of the Works and Biographies of Dan- iel Webster, published by Little, Brown and Co., Boston, in 1879: “this was received with great ap- plause, and on rising to respond to it Mr. Webster was greeted with nine enthusiastic cheers, and the most hearty and pro- longed approbation.”
