Tribe, Superathletes, and the Greatest Race the World Has Ever Seen
by Christopher McDougall

Born to Run is a fast-
paced account of one jour- nalist’s quest to uncover the secrets of the world’s greatest distance runners – the Tarahumara Indian tribe that lives in a remote canyon of northern Mexi- co. This is a non-fiction work that reads like fic- tion in many places and culminates with an ultra- marathon conducted in the mountains of Mexico. In Born to Run, Chris McDougall locates the Tarahumara and applies their techniques to his own running which had previously caused numer- ous injuries. Along the way, he becomes involved with an eccentric known as Caballo Blanco (white horse), a transplant from California and Colorado to Mexico, and numerous other colorful characters who are interested in cre- ating the greatest running race. Through research and excellent writing, Mc- Dougall shares his find- ings on the value of run- ning barefoot, his insights into the sport of ultra- marathoning, his own endurance training with

At that point in time, approxi- mately 250 patients in the six New England states were listed, with approxi- mately 25-30 of them ac- tually finding a match and having surgery each year. Needless to say, with new patients being listed daily, the chances of receiving that all important phone call were slim at best. A nationwide effort to ed-
ucate the public about the organ donation program, including the overwhelm- ing cooperation of Mo- tor Vehicle Departments all over the country, has in the last few years in- creased the number of reg- istered donors dramatical- ly, but the waiting time for patients is still extremely stressful physically and emotionally. Her husband passed away suddenly just two years later, which left Flo without the income and benefits that were so cru- cial to her follow-up care. Other health complica- tions have also taken their toll and Cilley is in chronic rejection, for which there is no cure. Frequent trips to Mass General are required for
regular check-ups, con- stant testing, and exams specific to lung transplant – bronchoscopies, scans, CT’s, stress tests, blood work and x-rays. Since Flo’s health makes it im- possible for her to work, even these travel expenses add to her burden. The biggest expense for
all transplant patients is the regime of prescrip- tion medicines that deal with rejection issues and the complications that those meds can cause. See FLO on 26
