BELKNAP LANDSCAPE, NORTHEAST LASER GRADING AND PIKE INDUSTRIES IMPROVE GILFORD HIGH SCHOOL PLAYING FIELDS
Belknap Landscape
Company Inc. (BLC) is the Lakes Region’s pre- mier landscape design- build firm, providing an unmatched scope of land- care services to area resi- dential and commercial clients. BLC, led by Owner Hayden McLaughlin dem- onstrates local environ- mental stewardship by giving back to the com- munities whenever he can. Recently McLaugh- lin’s landscape company teamed with Eston Ross of Northeast Laser Grading and Christian Zimmer- mann of Pike Industries to orchestrate improvements at the Gilford High School Soccer/Lacrosse playing field. In the Fall of 2009 Her- mann Defregger, GHS Ju- nior Varsity Coach spear- headed a fundraising ef- fort with the Friends of Gilford HS Soccer. A large blue fence surrounded the playing field, indicating fieldwork was pending. A low muddy area from the middle of the field to the sideline where the player benches are had gotten dramatically worse over the past few years. Hermann Defregger com- mented on the joint effort,

“We had an opportunity to do something about it and had a very short window last Fall – just 3 days due to weather and equipment availability. We made the decision to go ahead with Phase 1, the grading and site preparation part. This was the best time to repair the field and Autumn is best time to plant seed.” Coach Defregger contin-
ued, “Christian from over at Pike Industries donated and delivered tons of loam and then Eston at North- east Laser Grading spread the loam and properly

graded the field. Hayden from Belknap Landscape prepared the graded site, seeded and put tarps on the field until the seeds germinated. These com- panies did all this work
for our kids at their cost. We are very grateful for the donations of time and equipment and appreciate the support by these indi- viduals and companies.” Defregger explained that
Phase 2 included remov- al of the massive tarps, which were essential to the success of growing new grass quickly. “Then, through Belknap Land- scape’s fertilizing, water- ing and mowing twice a week a beautiful field has been created for all our Middle School through High School athletes to play on.” Coach Defreg- ger continued, “Belknap Landscape returned early this Spring to do a slice seeding effort, inserting additional grass seed into the turf. Sports fields take an incredible beating so the job had to be done by professionals. Now the field drains properly and is in terrific shape, even after a brutally hot sum- mer.” Coach Defregger added
