Indonesia Reports 2 New Bird Flu Cases, 1 Fatality

Indonesia has reported two new bird fl u cases, one of them fatal, bringing the country’s human death toll from the disease to 136 since it emerged here in 2005, the government said Friday (7/5). The Health Ministry said in its website that a 4-year-old girl from the Riau provincial capital of Pekanbaru died on Feb. 28th 2010 after developing symptoms on April 19. Investigations into the source of infection are under way, the ministry said. The second case was reported in the town of Malang in East Java Province when a 45-year-old woman contracted symptoms on Feb. 22. She recovered and is now in a healthy condition. Four days before the onset of the bird fl u symptoms, the woman was exposed to dead chickens. Laboratory tests on both cases confi rmed infection with the H5N1 avian infl uenza virus, the ministry said. Indonesia has reported 136 deaths from bird flu, nearly half of the 294 fatalities worldwide, according to the World Health Organization.

Bali Nine’s Scott Rush Circumcised in Jail ‘for Islam’

Bali Nine death row prisoner Scott Rush has been circumcised in a secret jail ceremony in Bali and has told authorities he is learning about Islam. Authorities at Kerobokan Jail confi rmed that Rush had undergone a circumcision on Friday (7/5) in the jail’s Muslim prayer area. The jail’s doctor and other offi cials were not even aware the circumcision had taken place until the weekend and were angered that such a procedure had been conducted by someone who was not authorised by the jail. They have since questioned Rush’s motives and whether he had really converted to Islam. Rush is a Catholic and his parents are staunchly religious. As recently as a week ago Rush was attending Christian church services at the jail. The jail’s head of education and rehabilitation, Anang, said that Rush had told him he was still learning about Islam. “His answers were complicated,’’ Anang said about his discussion with Rush, whom he has told to provide him with more answers today. And the jail’s doctor, Agung Hartawan, who was only aware of the circumcision on the weekend, said luckily it was a good job and not bleeding too much. Dr Hartawan said he had asked Rush if he converted to Islam and that he said: “I want to learn Islam.” And he said when he further questioned Rush about the secretive procedure and whether his parents were even aware of it, that Rush had told him: “This is my right and I just want to know about Islam, I want to learn about Islam.’’ Rush is one of three members of the Bali Nine on death row for their role in the heroin traffi cking gang. He is due to lodge his fi nal appeal very soon. (May 11th

Twelve More Terror Suspects Nabbed

Indonesia’s anti-terror police unit has arrested 12 people suspected to be members of a terrorist network holding military-like training in Aceh recently. “Yes, it’s true that arrests have been made in three locations of 12 alleged terrorists,” National Police spokesman Inspector General Edward Aritonang said here on Friday. He said the Densus 88 anti-terror unit arrested three of them in Setu, Bekasi, West Java, seven in Pasar Minggu, South Jakarta, and one in a hotel in Menteng, Central Jakarta and another one in Petamburan, Central Jakarta. He said he could not as yet tell about their identities or roles they played in the network as investigation and development of the case was still ongoing. “What is clear is they are allegedly involved directly with the training in Aceh,” he said adding that investigators had confiscated evidence materials from them.Edward said their general role they played in the network was supporting the training program in Aceh such as sending logistics, recruiting people and arranging

New Kuta Sex Shock Angers Bali Police

Bali Police are hunting for a mysterious Indonesian woman who appeared in an amateur pornographic fi lm recorded seven years ago. The fi lm, shot at Kuta beach, is titled “Koreana,” and stars an Indonesia woman and a Caucasian man. It is understood the movie only became popular after the recent controversy surrounding the documentary, “Cowboys in Paradise,” about the sex lives of Bali’s Kuta Cowboys, who it has been alleged service female tourists for money or other favors. “We will investigate who spread the movie on the Internet and in DVDs,” Bali Police spokesman Snr. Comr. Gede Sugianyar Dwi Putra told SCTV. “The woman is Indonesian, not Korean. We can tell from her looks and she speaks Javanese in the movie.” According to the police, the 22-minute movie was amateurish, given that it was shot on a camcorder. The police are also having trouble identifying the ‘actors’ because the video was shot seven years ago. The movie begins with a panoramic pan of Kuta beach as the camera follows two of the beach’s security offi cers patrolling on a motorcycle. The next scene shows the woman speaking to a beach vendor in fl uent Javanese. The grainy sex scenes occur on the balcony of a hotel overlooking the beach. Angered Bali Police who were hoping to charge “Cowboys in Paradise” director Amit Virmani with failing to procure the required permit to fi lm have run into a major roadblock - Indonesia doesn’t have an extradition treaty with Singapore. Indonesia’s Diluted Expatriate Property Rule Nearly Completed

The government has backpedaled on a proposal to allow foreigners to own property in Indonesia for 90 years and will now only simplify the extension process and not change the maximum length of title from the current 70-year tenure. The changes are contained in a new regulation which will be presented to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono for approval before the end of May, the Ministry of Public Housing’s Jamil Ansari said on Wednesday. The regulation is expected to take effect within two months of the president approving it, he said. “The draft review of the regulation is almost fi nished and we expect it will be ready by the end of May,” Jamil said. Currently, foreigners can hold property for 25 years. After the term expires, they may renew their property rights with the National Land Agency (BPN) for an additional 25 years and then extend it once more for 20 years, making for a total of 70 years. Under the new regulation, foreigners will be able to renew for the additional 25- and 20-year terms at the same time, effectively meaning they will be able to renew for 45 years. “Many foreigners fi nd that the extension process for their property is really unpractical. Therefore, we decided to simplify it,” Jamil said. Teguh Satria, chairman of the Indonesian Real Estate Developers Association (REI), said it would make more sense for foreigners to be able to own property outright so they did not have to go through time-consuming extensions. Not allowing foreigners to own property meant Indonesia’s property sector was less competitive compared to Singapore and Malaysia, Teguh said. He said there were around 83,000 foreigners living in Indonesia. If 10,000 of those foreigners bought a $250,000 apartment it would translate into $2.5 billion of foreign investment, Teguh said.
