The Guide 23

Update

Biku now does an Asian High Tea! Mother Asri and her two boys are always trying to come up with something different [until it gets copied elsewhere!]. This amazing tea house on Raya

Petitenget has been busy since the day it opened. Now they are offering an Asian High Tea [pictured]. It consists of Salak poached in cinnamon and star anise, Vietnamese Spring Rolls, Ayam Sisit [spicy shredded chicken] with Sambal Matah Tarts, Indian Samosa with homemade chutney, Curried Egg Sandwiches, Date Scones with mango jam, Moroccan Orange cake with rose tea syrup [an Asian transplant], Pineapple and Mint Agar-Agar [sweet dessert cake], Dadar Gulung [Javanese stuffed pancake roll] and Kue Mochi. All served with a choice of green teas, oolong teas or Masala chai. Even the crockery comes from Good Earth India! Just because it is called a High Tea does not mean you cannot order their wonderful blended coffee, one of the best in Bali!

Blue Ocean Beach Restaurant & Terrace

The Bake House has replaced Swell Restaurant at Pecatu. As this enormous area generally referred to as The Bukit continues its rapid expansion with villa complexes and

luxury resorts, under construction everywhere, so too is the noticeable upgrade of the area’s local eateries evolving. The new Australian management at The Bake House serves a complete range of quality budget-priced food [inside in the air-con with free wi-fi , or in the outdoor section with large sports screen]. Open early at 7.00 for Breakfast [real Eggs Benedict with English muffi n and poached egg, no substitutes], Snacks of Chicken Quesadillas [tortillas wrapped around chicken breast and jalapenos with cheddar cheese, guacamole and tomato salsa on the side], for Salad a Herb-crusted Ahi Tuna tossed in mixed lettuce and bell peppers in honey mustard dressing, a spicy Indonesian taste from their Beef Rendang and International mains such as beer-battered Fish & Chips and Chicken Breast wrapped in bacon. Pasta dishes and a Pizza selection, fi nish with a Lime Tart with strawberry ice cream. As the name suggests it is also a bakery with tasty pies [beef, chicken or vegetarian] pastries and breads all available for take-away or eat in.

Bayu’s Kitchen now wears a new wig! A new lounge area has also been added as well as the new roof and an attractive street-side terrace, but the original setting remains, tablecloths

and all, at this popular Penestanan location, up above Ubud. All very stylish for what is really a warung but one with a bit of style, and most importantly a very clean, modern, hygienic kitchen. All the usual Indonesian dishes are here including a few with a bit of a twist; Nasi Goreng Special [with sliced sausage, vegetables, egg and chicken sate], and the Mi Goreng, Nasi Campur and Cap Cay all have a few options. Added has been more International dishes; Salads [a Tropical Salad with meat or fi sh extras], Snacks [grilled chicken on baguette, corn or vegetable fritters, steamed fi sh dim sum], and range from the big BBQ [chicken, burgers and hot dogs]. A very modern warung with an International touch, fresh, clean and cheerful, but still at warung prices!

Crispy Pata is one of my all-time favourite dishes, bringing back memories of many happy years spent working, living and eating in Manila, The Philippines. Whilst it is now what

could be called a national dish [sold at every local restaurant] in fact it was only invented in the 1930’s in a small roadside snack bar on Roxas Boulevard, it is now the signature dish of the Aristocrat chain of restaurants [developed from that snack bar] Newly arrived in Bali is the Crispy Pata restaurant in front of the SilQ residences on Raya Petitenget, Kerobokan. Needless to say that dish features prominently on their menu. What is it? A Pork Knuckle fi rst salted and simmered then hung to cool. At time of ordering the Pata is placed in very hot oil to brown and the skins explodes, going all crunchy and crispy! The traditional accompanying sauce consists of vinegar, soy sauce, cloves of crushed garlic, diced onion hot pepper. Original, I would say so, as the restaurant manager here is a descendant from the lady who created that dish! A treat for ‘porkaholics’ like me!

La Cantina is down a narrow lane beside Warung Gossip in Jln. Pengubangan Kauh, Kerobokan. The simple menu is in two sections, Asian and Western. The Asian section begins

with a series of wonderful fresh spring rolls; vegetarian, chicken & green mango, tiger prawns or a combined chicken & tiger prawns. They are sold individually, so you can order a selection. Nem is what fried spring rolls are called in North Vietnam, here there are many varieties; tofu & vegetables, chicken and soya, beef and mushrooms, prawns and bamboo shoots and pork with capsicum. Now on Fridays @ 7.00 p.m., they serve a special dinner, Couscous Royal. Almost in Nasi Campur style a mound of soft couscous is surrounded by a Moroccan merguez sausage, small serves of smoked lamb that has been simmered in a broth and chicken done the same way and a selection of vegetables. A prior reservation is necessary.

Warung Little India is the new name for what was Warung Nasi Goreng at the top of Jln.Hanoman, Ubud. No change of management or even the menu for that matter, just

the name. A strange little place with seating for no more than 12 persons and most of them are sitting on the footpath, but already a survivor having lasted the years whilst many other have been and gone. Whilst the enormous menu, for such a small place, offers Thai and Indonesian [featuring a number of different Nasi Gorengs] it is obviously their Indian cuisine that they are now trying to publicise. Almost all pre-cooked it includes Samosas,Yellow Lentil Soup, an English style Indian Chicken Curry [a touch of the Raj], Qorma Mutton and a Mutton Biryani which is a fried rice dish made with many spices, yet another Asian dish that harks back to the days of a powerful Persia and their nomadic travels across the Spice Road to China [beryan is old Persian for fried].

Maural Dreams Bistrot is the strangely named newcomer that has replaced the very short lived Narcosis Lounge on Jln. Danau Tamblingan. It is the fi rst café in Sanur with

a French touch. Inside is pleasantly air-conditioned, the outside terrace now covered and protected from the sun. Poelee de Champignons are sautéed with garlic and parsley, the Chicken Wings are with Thai spices; chilli, coriander and thyme, but not stuffed in the Thai style. Salade de Foie de Volaille are pan-fried chicken livers [a rare item on Bali menus, something which has always amazed me!] whilst Salade Alsacienne stars a Cervelas Pork Sausage topped with grated gruyere and onions. The Crème de Potiron is a thick baked pumpkin soup topped with sour cream, garlic bread on the side. Just feel like a snack? Then there is a Black Pepper Chicken Sandwich or that French standard, Croque Monsieur!
