GIVING TEENS A PATH TOWARDS HOPE
On May 27, international musician Sylvia van Swieten will direct a
Celebration Fundraiser,
including
afternoon workshops and evening world music concert, for Bali Global Orphanage, a foundation that educates bright teenagers from very poor families.
Graduation day is around the corner for many of Bali’s senior school students, but fewer are leaving school to start a career or even with a job in mind. However, as a result of the commitment of a former “anak miskin” (child of poverty), successful Indonesian businesswoman Ibu Selorini Mina, a large and growing group of Bali teenagers will begin adult life with very good grades, practical work experience, jobs and a bright future.
The Bali Global Orphan- age and Foundation, attached to Suly Resort and Spa on the main road between Mas and Ubud (Jl Cok Rai Pudak), is home to more than 135 boys and
girls – aged 15 to 20 - selected by heads of local banjars as being the poorest and most likely to benefi t from a hand up.
The Majoya Music celebration will raise urgently needed funds to up-grade the students’ dormitories, extend them to house a further 80 students who begin in the new school year on July 18, 2010. It will also add to the budget for their food and school materials.
Ibu Selorini, whose businesses now stretch from Indonesia to Singapore and China, says she persuaded her family several years ago to help her support the children of Bali. Having worked as a social worker for the Singapore government, “To give me an understanding to their needs”, she and her husband bought Suly Resort and created an education centre next to it as a “retirement project”, at first offering free classes to children from nearby local orphanages. In addition to the national Indonesian curriculum, classes focused on broadening the students’ in skills in a wide range of jobs. Eventually they spoke to neighbouring banjars and set up their own foundation, which is also supported by retired State University of Udayanya professors, volunteer
programs, Rotary and Australian Business Volunteers Abroad.
Students have work experience – often in fi ve star resorts such as the Kupu Kupu Barong - and later are helped to fi nd good jobs, either within the resort and spa, or across Bali. In addition to jobs such as gardening, hospitality, cooking, wait staffi ng, hotel, spa and restaurant management.
All students are strongly encouraged to develop any artistic or musical skills, or personal interests, and to believe that they can succeed in whatever they choose. Ibu Selorini’s role as mentor and role model cannot be over-estimated in this mix.
“We are opening their world and they see there are lots of other jobs they can do, not just waiters in tourism. They can apply for scholarships around the world through various foundations, but fi rst they must believe in themselves like I did,” Ibu Selorini said.
The concept of the Majoya Fundraiser is firstly to showcase the skills and interests of Bali Global students, who will run
some of the workshops – teaching music and dance – and offer massages, and secondly to give local children and these teenagers the opportunity to experience workshops in other topics.
The workshops and activities, including African Dance, Face Painting. Magic, Balinese Dance and Music and Singing Yoga, will begin at 2pm, and there’s a beautiful pool for swimming and playing and food to buy. Music Performances will begin at 4pm, including Jivaraja Sita and Tabla, Susu Ibu, Hanuman Drums and World Music Finale at 11pm. Individual workshops by donation.
People are encouraged to pre-purchase their 50,000rp tickets for the event, from Ubud’s Bali Bud-
