Bali Rugby Development Team Tours to Sumbawa

This SportingLife

The Chilli’s not quite hot enough in Jakarta

The Bali Rugby Development side travelled to Sumabawa for a game against the Sumbawa “Nagas” development team. These development teams are predominantly made up of Indonesian born players who are guided in their understanding of the game by a limited number of expatriate players included in the team. Development teams play a major role in the growth of rugby in Indonesia and now exist in many provinces. This tour for the Bali team was their fi rst to Sumbawa. After some 12 hours of cross-island travel, the team arrived in Sumbawa where they were the guests of mining company, PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara.

The game was entertaining with both sides playing with great spirit. The larger forward pack of the Sumbawa team gave their back line plenty of clean ball and they were soon on the scoreboard. James Medley from the Nagas scoring a try in each of the fi rst two quarters. Bali tried hard all day with their lineout working particularly well, but the team was unable to break the strong defence of the Nagas, with the local team running out as 22-0 winners.

It was the fi rst time a rugby team had made the effort to travel to Sumbawa and from this inaugural game both sides have pledged to turn it into an annual three games series, with the next game to be played in Bali in September.

Canggu Club to host International Youth Soccer Tournament

After the success of their previous two regional events, the Asian Soccer Academy (ASA) is delighted to confi rm its third “Bali 5s” International Youth Soccer Tournament, scheduled to take place on the 29-30 May 2010. Played at the Canggu Club, the tournament will include 32 academy and school teams, aged 8-14 years, from Asia and Australia.

For the past 7 years, the Asian Soccer Academy, Asia’s leading sports training institution with over 1 million active members, has successfully implemented youth soccer devel- opment activities throughout the region that have entailed a series of grass roots coaching clinics together with national and international tournaments.

Talented young players at the Bali 5s event will be offered free scholarships to join elite ASA squads, hence providing them with the opportunity to progress from grass roots to professional club level. With Technical Director Lee Hawkins scouting for professional UK clubs, ASA has sent more than 30 players to Manchester United F.C., and Portsmouth F.C. The fi rst weekend in May saw the Bali Rugby Senior team “The Chilli’s” make the annual pilgrimage to Jakarta for the ISCI 10’s. The day started earlier than expected for the Chilli’s, who after a late change to the draw were forced to play only 10 minutes after arriving at the fi eld. The lack of preparation showed and the Bali team took awhile to get moving, but eventually ran out to a four try to nil win against the ISCI Dragons.

The Chilli’s next game was against JIS, the Jarkarta International School team. After a torrid affair, the superior fi tness and commitment of the younger team saw Bali go down 7-0.

A six try romp over French outfi t, Jago Dulu, by the Chilli’s was followed by the crunch match against the host’s fi rst team, the Komodos from ISCI. The fi rst half was played in torrential rain, with neither side gaining any real advantage. Unfortunately even with the vocal support for Bali of other competing teams such as the Nagas, the second half was all ISCI as they ran in two tries to seal Bali’s fate.

This put the Chilli’s into the plate fi nal in a repeat of the day’s fi rst game against the ISCI Dragons. What should have been more silverware for Bali turned into a game of what could have been, with at least two tries bombed and passes dropped by the Chilli’s, resulting in a win to the Dragons.

Player of the tournament for Bali was second rower Dan Sivess, who was rewarded for a strong performance all day by being named in the Indonesian National Team squad. Dan will join other Bali players Nick Mesritz and Grant “Olly” Olsen in Jakarta next month to take on Pakistan, Guam and Iran in the IRB Division 3 A5N tournament.

Bali Soccer Sixes

A large number of teams from across the region have entered the ninth annual Bali Soccer Sixes. The six-a- side tournament will take place on Saturday 29th May at Lapangan Samudra in Kuta, and will feature teams from Borneo, Sumbawa, Jakarta, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, China and Australia.. The event is organized with the support of the Bali Sport for Peace Foundation (Yayasan Damai Olahraga), who will be holding a number of sporting activities over the coming months. The work of the Yayasan will be greatly enhanced with the involvement of a number of Australian volunteers assisting in developing training programs for local children in various sports.
