Casio Exilim EX-S7 and EX-Z35 point-and-shoots
More Gadgets Galore. In this issue I’ve some information for you about which reclarable batteries to buy; three great cameras; a nift bag for your camera; and a voice controlled lamp! Enjoy.
Duracell vs Energizer rechargeable batteries
The Energizer AA batteries are rated at 2200 mAh and the Duracells at 2000 mAh (that’s milliampere-hours, a
measurement of energy charge). But the Duracells last a lot longer.
Testing was done using an ICON LED fl ashlight, this solid aluminum model with high and low settings—the high setting killing a standard battery in about 3 hours. Through several trials using different cells, the Energizer lasted 2 to 3.5 hours, while the Duracells took anywhere from 5 to 6.5 hours to drain. Not an insignifi cant discrepancy and contrary to the respective charge ratings on each.
The Duracell family of rechargeable batteries also come pre-charged out of the package, so that’s very convenient. They’ve also have USB ports for charging USB gadgets. Both companies offer car and 15 minute chargers. The Duracell Mobile charger is a favorite simply because it has a car adapter and a wall adapter, and can charge 4 AA batteries or any USB device from those sources. (It does not do 15 minute charges, however, but I’d rather buy extras and have them ready to go.) The only real drawback is that it can’t charge D cells and 9V batteries like the giant sized Energizer family charger can. Both kinds of batteries are NiMH. Duracell claims their batteries will hold their charge for a year in storage, while Energizer claims only 6 months.
Frills aside, the bottom line here is battery life, and Duracell has a lot more of it than Energizer.
Canon EOS 7D
Maybe you’re tired of using a crappy point- and-shoot. Or, maybe you feel like you’ve outgrown your awe- some, yet dated, PowerShot G9.
Maybe you’re just looking to strap on a full-featured DSLR. Canon’s newest 7D is the way to go. There’s no maybe about it. Built around a brand new 18-megapixel image sensor, the chunky, magnesium-bodied 7D bangs out impressively sharp, beautifully saturated images at the brisk clip of eight frames a second.
Ok, now let’s introduce a couple of compact shooters. Casio has just released the new Exilim EX-S7 and EX-Z35.
cameras offer up 12.1 megapixel sensors, 3x optical zooms and direct-to-web upload options; the S7
ships with a 720p HD video mode and a 2.7-inch rear LCD, while the Z35 gets a VGA movie mode and a 2.5-inch LCD. Neither option will blow any minds, but the relatively low $139.99 / $109.99 (in order of mention) price points just might generate some interest from the novices in attendance.
www.casio.com Cloak Bag disguises your fancy camera
Ok, I’ll admit it – I want this! When I put my camera into my camera
bag, it usually it means I’m done. Then of course as soon as I zip up that bag, there will be a great shot that I missed. It just always seems to work that way. Well instead of missing important pictures, now you can own a bag that lets you take all of the pictures you want without removing it from the bag. Just fl ip up the top and it’ll reveal all of the necessary buttons to work your camera. Plus you’ll easily be able to see the screen of your digital camera. The bottom of the bag is missing entirely, so there will be no need to remove anything. It’s just as easy as it would normally be to use your camera. Plus there’s a zipper pocket that once unzipped allows you to mess with the camera lens. The Cloak Bag won’t let you show off your camera, but instead keeps people from trying to steal it constantly.

There are times that as lazy as it makes us sound, we just don’t want to go across the room to turn on or off a light. It’s moments like that in which people start thinking up strange inventions to solve the issue. Which is probably how this voice controlled lamp came into existence. Now instead of walking to shut off the small LED lamp, you can shut it off from up to 10 meters away.
The introduction of
video imaging to the DSLR format a few years ago started off as an unpolished add-on buried in the menu tree. However, the 7D has a refi ned moving-image support at 1080p or 720p resolution in a variety of frame rates. The video controls have been moved to within thumb’s reach on the back of the camera next to the viewfi nder, so you don’t have to miss any of the action while digging through the menus anymore — easy. The 7D is an outstanding shooter on nearly every level. So, if you don’t need — or want — to spring for a full-frame DSLR, but want a tough, easy-to-use and ridiculously customizable camera that makes pro- quality images at an affordable price, then you’d be silly not to consider this camera.

The lamp is USB powered and has a total of 12 bright LED lights. It has two different modes that you can set the lamp to, there’s the normal on/off mode and then the voice controlled on/off. That way you don’t want to worry that you’ll accidentally turn the light off by the sound of your voice. The lamp is capable of being shut off through any voice within the proper range.
